Re: Build Quality
That reminds me, my favourite bass, a 70s Ibanez has the neck made up of several pieces of wood. Still sounds good though, and it's lasted this long without falling apart.Rhettsauce wrote: My LP Studio, for example, has what must be a 6 or 7 piece mahogany back. It's always bothered me a bit that Gibson would let that through when all the Jap Tokai LP's on Trademe seem to be 1 or 2 piece for the same price.

That's not uncommon. It generally makes them stronger.Vince wrote:That reminds me, my favourite bass, a 70s Ibanez has the neck made up of several pieces of wood. Re: Build Quality
Think of it this way Rhett; Gibson carefully selected their 7 best sounding pieces of Mahogany and combined them to make your guitar. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
Black Benny is made of multiple bits of wood and it sounds utterly....crap actually.
But in a good way.![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Re: Build Quality
Obviously the way to go is sell off all your bullshit gear and get Ash to make you a guitar entirely carved from a single plank of 4 million year old langkauri.

Re: Build Quality
Might be adviseable.... spending more time playing/less time worrying about the makeup of the instrument might be more enjoyable?Rhettsauce wrote:Haha. I guess I could tell myself that...

Re: Build Quality
There are many brands of top posts in this thread.
I fear that you're doing too much worrying and not enough playing. You've got a jcm800 and you're worried about how many bits of wood your LP is made out of?? Does it sound good? If not, replace the pickups. If it still doesn't flaking good, get an HD500.
On the subject of Gibson, the 2012 models that we've had through the store have been fantastic build and sound wise. In fact I can't think of a Gibson we've had that's been anything less than great, including the studio tribute models.
I actually reckon you should get a hollow or semi hollow guitar sonyou can count the number of sheets of ply it's made out of, and possibly worry about the glue it's made from. And how the finish effects the resonance.
If I had $1500 to spend on a guitar, I'd get a DC LP junior or a twin P90 monster from Radian.

Re: Build Quality
If you need to purchase a Jap Tokai, I might know a guy selling one. I'll just get his number - BRB...
