What do we think of the SD hyperswitch?

Post by Reg18 »

Somehow I missed this realise until I saw it it on the latest Rockshop email.
My initial thoughts were how can a 5 way switch be $300! But once I saw the Bluetooth functionality etc maybe it’s the perfect way to modernise an older guitar without any major modifications.
What do we think?

I saw that and wasn’t sure if was meant to drop in April, maybe on the first? Or possibly more likely, I just don’t understand it, nor feel the need to…

I like the innovation of it, but maybe it is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Horrible idea. Adds complexity and vulnerability to your live rig. Ask Captain Black: The song is starting and suddenly your phone won't connect to your (in his case) pedal.
Well maintained mechanical switch and quickly replaceable cable for the win.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

If you had 3 humbuckers with 4 conductor wires you could probably do dozens of different combinations.
Not that I have any guitars currently with 3 pickups but I’m
Sure I could have fun trying pickup combinations if I did.

Its a cool idea for cutom guitars that would normally have umpteen toggle switches to flick to get the different pickup combinations. Thought about making sometbing lke this years ago.

It's a cool idea. What it really needs is some sort of "fail safe" mode so that it always remembers the current 5 settings regardless of whether the "brain" dies or won't boot etc. after that I suspect it would be trust worthy.

The challenge it faces I think is that most guitarists WANT to own multiple guitars for multiple tones :)

Interesting concept, but it just reminds me why I sit on the bridge pickup 99% of the time; simplicity.
There's likely someone that it will gel with though.

Something that’s in that halfway point of usefulness due to the application.

It reminds me of how the singer-guitarist in Thrice uses a stereo out from his guitar (signal per pickup) going to his Helix floor so that as the show goes on his Helix automatically “switches” to the correct pickup. He doesn’t have to care about tap dancing or even doing anything other than singing and playing, assuming his helix is being synced with midi to a show runner sort of program.

This kinda gives me that sense of being able to program guitar changes into your setlist.

More than anything though, I’m getting robot tuner vibes

That's pretty cool. I've seen similar setups to swap presets etc. using the Helix but hadnt considered using a stereo out to enable it swap pickups,
