I tend to think the use of the word on this forum is symbolic of the general lack of knowledge regarding gear that this place exhibited in the early days. We've come a long way since then.
Regardless, it is part of the language of this forum. Rightly or wrongly, around here Samick=crap/ghey and Ovation=ghey. Such is the life of forum in-jokes.

The thing is that 20 years ago, Samick guitars DID suck. But they've come a loooooooong way since then. Lot's of people are saying 'I had a Samick Strat copy when this many years ago and it was a POS'. I'm not disputing that. But nowadays they make very fine quality guitars, and they make guitars for many other brands that you don't think suck. G&L indonesia for instance is made by Samick I believe. Used to be Cort that made G&L, maybe it still is, but most Corts are Chinese now and most Samick's are Indonesian, so I'm guessing that the Indonesian G&L's are Samick now. Regardless, many more prestigious brands have their cheaper ranges made by either Samick or Cort.

Now I work in a store for which Ibanez is one of the core brands, but I have to say, at the lower end of the range you get far better quality for your money with a Samick Greg Bennet or a Cort than you do with an Ibanez. It's very hard to beat Samick and Cort for value for money these days.

Of course, branding and marketing is a factor. We all want to look cool and to be seen as having a cool guitar, so we spend thousands of dollars on a Gibson because we could swear it sounds better, and we definitely know it's cooler.

Actually, considering what samick replaces via the word filter, we're actually talking a bunch of random something-else...

I played a red Samick strat copy in my high school band The Manic Salted Peanut Theory.

I couldn't tell you anything about the quality but I've never felt like as much of a badass as I did when we played Nirvana's 'Breed' and I used the Samick at our youth group.

Cool. Now we need to get to the bottom of who makes all the guitar strings.

I'd be very interested in a rundown of which factory makes what. Musicworks is especially guilty of have three or more different brands on the shelves that are obviously made in the same factory...
