Best Gigbag?

Postby Zaulkin on Fri Jul 30, 2010 7:16 pm

Hi guys.

Does anyone here use a heavy duty gigbag rather than a hardcase?

I'm interested to know which one you think is the best, and where I can get one from. I have checked out a Suhr Gigbag which looks very sweet, but it doesn't look like Trueman will be able to get any in stock for a few months.

Tribal planet bags also look good. What else is there? I basically want something with lots of thick padding, that is durable and has shoulder straps/a shoulder strap.

Yeh the Suhr ones are GREAT ( I use one for my Les Paul Deluxe and Tele) but the shipping cost for them is extremely high (UPS shipping) so I need to consolidate the order with some other Suhr equipment, send us your Suhr guitar orders :D

Best one I've seen is the one that my Godin fits in, I'd almost trust it as much as a real case. But not quite ;)

I've had a gator bag...and yes rubbish compared to a hard case but... what are you actually expecting? Do you want to use it as a skateboard? But a hardcase and fit straps to it :)

I said the rock bags are rubbish, not the gator bags. I've got friends who have had their rock bags for a month and they've already fallen apart on almost every seam.

I just want something that is light, that I can have on my back and that is still protective enough. It means that I can keep my hands free, or if I need to take a lot of things then I can.

oops should have worn my nerdy glasses... yeah you want canvas or similar. Whats it for? If you have a decent hardcase for trade I could part with my
Godin bag ;) Or ask sundowner to make you a bag?

The only issue I've had with the Gator is that they're not really meant to be carried by the handle.

After a few times that I used the handle, it started to come off. I'd bought it off Weta, took it back to them, they put a screw on it (that fixed the problem, and it only took five minutes) and suggested I use the straps from now on. :)

Feel free to say 'of course you are going to say that' ... but that's bollocks.

I have a Deluxe Rockbag for my acoustic that I have had for over ten years. When I was gigging, it was in and out of the car and gigs once or twice a week. The only merest stretch of a seam is by the handle. No tearing or falling apart - perfectly robust. The price on them is $55.

I have one of the cheap economy elec guitar ones we do at $25 for two years ... and except where I cut it with a craft knife by mistake. It's fine.

I also have mini bass guitar bag (I have a half size Samick Bass for my wife) - over 8 years old but bugger all use. Perfectly fine.

I also have a keyboard bag that I have had for 5 years that carries my heavy shit - 2 x mic stands, 2 x guitar stands, mic case, black cover sheet and something else. Which was used every gig I played (best week was 8 gigs with the countrty band). Can't remember what the price is on it.

So you can see that I have some personal experience with 4 Rockbags that I own and have done for a while.

Which means that saying Rockbags tear at the seams within a month or a few months is exaggerating at the very least. I've been at the RS for 13 years ... never had a bag returned for that. Did have one returned for a guy where the handle ripped off but he wasn't using it for carrying a 76 note keyboard - he was using it for his drum hardware and exceeding the weight limit by 5 times.

If they did tear at the seam with in a month, people would be returning them in droves. And they aren't.

In fact I am so confident that if you get a Deluxe Rockbag at $55 ... and it tears at any seam within 12 months. I'll replace it. NZRS_Matt will back me up.
Yup - that's me and my pal Steve or little stevie vai as I like to call him. In Auckland airport when I was 26. I'm not 26 anymore.

It's not particularly 'for' anything, so I'm not really looking to trade. More of just something I can use at Uni to make life easy. As long as it fits a strat the size is good, and the ones I mentioned should do.

NZRS-Dave wrote:that's bollocks.

I admit I exaggerated that. However I do have friends who have had their rockbag for a month and there are tears in the fabric atleast on every side. I know another guy who bought his within the last couple of weeks who said "yeah, It's already falling apart".

Back in the day I used to have two of them. I treated them pretty well and they lasted, apart from a couple of holes. But really, I want something with thicker padding and I am happy to pay for it. Not buying a rockbag.

I've been really digging my guitar bag with straps on it. Cos, like, I don't have to carry it. It is just on my back.
