Re: Return of the Gibson shocker thread!
I have 2 lacewood tops in progress at the moment. Lacewood has surprisingly a fantastic "warm" tone to it (assume the soft bits of wood clip some top end of the tone). Not sure what sort of "fender chime" you would get with it but it would be great from playing classic style rock on a strat thats for sure...and it looks KILLERMolly wrote:
As an aside, do you have any experience of lacewood as a tonewood in an electric guitar? Was just looking at a CS Strat from 2003 with a lacewood body but can't find any information about the tonal characteristics.
he as an article from and acoustic guitar point

Re: Return of the Gibson shocker thread!
Thanks for that. Posted a few pics on the 'In the mail' thread. Interested to hear what sort of variation on the Strat tone it offers.willow13 wrote:I have 2 lacewood tops in progress at the moment. Re: Return of the Gibson shocker thread!
I love Gibson guitars but have no pity for them with what they are trying to do at the present. If they concentrated on building the best guitars at good prices then people wouldn't look for the alternatives.
That Framus V is very nice !
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Another PR disaster. Why was it necessary to video the destruction? What's the message? Could they not have simply given them to schools?

I was upset watching the video and I'm not a precious guy. There's a ton of musos around the world countries without resources who would have died to have one of these. Have you ever seen the videos where those guys have built their own guitars out of packing crates and fence wire?

But then they'd miss the chance for the great marketing video, and let's face it, the Merkin flag waving on the flag pole on the front lawn, Trump voting patriots couldn't give an empty Maccas wrapper for poor people in poor countries...much less poor people in their own country.
Tin arse!!

Trogly's video on the subject also shows 335s being smashed as part of the Memphis factory tear-out. It's to become a Fed-X depot.
Marketing and the romantic associations it gives rise to have nothing to do with the cold business of manufacturing. It's a waste from our point of view but a rational decision from theirs.
I worked a summer doing security for Reebok. Perfectly good shoes went through a shredder every day. Diverting them to needy parts of the world wasn't worth the cost and hijack risk.

Re: Return of the Gibson shocker thread!
To be fair the shredding wasn't put in the glossy marketing video intended to go viral on YouTube to "enhance" brand image. If you going to beat your chest about how cool you are, best ACTUALLY be cool.Molly wrote:Trogly's video on the subject also shows 335s being smashed as part of the Memphis factory tear-out. Re: Return of the Gibson shocker thread!
Gibson has release the following statement in response to this video.
“The Firebird X destruction video that surfaced months ago was an isolated batch of Firebird X models built in 2009-2011 which were unsalvageable and damaged with unsafe components. This isolated group of Firebird X models were unable to be donated for any purpose and were destroyed accordingly.
“Gibson recently announced its re-launch of the Gibson Foundation. Since 2002, the Gibson Foundation has provided thousands of guitars and donations to schools and charities in excess of $30 million. As a starting point, Gibson has committed to giving a guitar-a-day away over the next 1000 days. 100% of donations to the Gibson Foundation go directly towards giving the gift of music, re-affirming Gibson’s commitment to giving back, helping under-served music education programs, empowering music culture and encouraging the creation of music.”
