Ibanez & Epiphone Semi Hollows
School me up on these please. It's probably a hiding to nowhere but I thought I'd explore the possibility. Always liked the idea of a 335, never liked the price.
So I went for a look and saw this: Certainly blingy! Price was acceptable and I assumed that in time, I would have to replace the pups and pots.
Played it unplugged and it seemed all right. Was looking promising until I picked up an Ibanez John Scofield.
Baaad move; the $1250 guitar suddenly turned into a clunker. Sigh.
Does anyone have these or the Epiphone versions? What do you think of them? What needs to be done to make them as good as they can be?
The Scofield was great and I really like the Godin Montreal but for that money, I'm touching on 335 territory (almost) and besides, I'm not allowed to spend that much

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

SA's and me don't quite gel. The ones I've played have all been quite bright. Nothing wrong with that but I have plenty of bright guitars already.StrummersOfThunder wrote:What about second hand Yamaha sa series. Might pick one up in the mid 1000s in this market with an sa700 , 1000 , 1200 ?

There's a lovely throaty sound a 335 can make. I don't hear it in the SA's.

Re: Ibanez & Epiphone Semi Hollows
Rather than buying one of the new (Indonesian?) ones, I could encourage you to check out my 1984 Artist AM205 for a very fair price. It is more like the 339 (i.e.: a bit smaller than a 335). And it is a seriously kick ass - and now >30 year old - guitar.
Google Ibanez Artist AM205 to check out what I mean. Here's an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-iVdQRgfWk

Re: Ibanez & Epiphone Semi Hollows
I had a 90's Korean made Epi 335 which was great when I didnt know any better. Eventually the name on the headstock wore thin though.
Having played some really special 335s at gearfests etc though I am now ruined for copies.
Scratched the itch in the end with Ben's Robin Savoy which is a superb guitar.

It is a lovely day today
The 'throaty' sound is created by the loose 335 ply vibrating vigorously in an uncontrolled fashion, thereby 'tickling' the loosely wound pickup windings so that the combined physical and electrical properties of the electrons shooting through to the amp create magical Throat Sound.Post by StrummersOfThunder » Mon Oct 31, 2016 6:16 am

When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

He's right on this... Get this over a newer Epi or Ibanez, then sell it to me when I've got some cash.Kiwiaxe wrote:Rather than buying one of the new (Indonesian?) ones, I could encourage you to check out my 1984 Artist AM205 for a very fair price. Another option, if you are not put off by Reverb, is a used Eastman semi. Wonderful vintage-like tones...

Well, it is made in Japan, so should be good quality. Looks like a good spec too, but yes, try them first.HackSaw wrote:Where do these fit in this discussion? (If at all)
