Conservatism Test: How do you handle this lot?

Post by Slowy »

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

While I am all for trying out new grasses, the shapes and what not else does not appeal to me. At my age (perhaps yours too?) conservatism rules.
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

My impression was that some of them were trying to be different just for the sake of being different.
Also, some of the designs would have looked better if they had been styled by professionals, the proportions on many were just plain wrong.
Epiphone Riviera P93 & EJ200CE, Hagstrom Viking Bass, Doubleneck bass/guitar.
Rivera Clubster 45, Carvin AG100D, Ashton BSK158.

Other than the ugly hexagonal motif, I really like the white one in this pic:

the harp guitars are hardly new, I'm fine with them.

this one seems a bit of a riff on a Macaferri?

There's a lot of interesting, boundary pushing stuff happening in acoustic guitar, especially when you get to the whole "percussive guitar" thing. I'm not really surprised that acoustic luthiers are doing more than just churning out tired old strats and teles with very slightly changed headstocks.

Luthiers churn out what people will pay for. And in the electric arena that's strats, Teles, LPs and their ilk for the most part. They've been there in electric already (80s and 90s particularly) but with the exception of perhaps PRS and some of the Duesenberg stuff (and maybe Parker if that ever really got popular) it has been discarded for what sells.

Oh, of course. Because there have always been electric guitars and nobody ever needed to take the plunge and keep swimming. ;)

I agree that the conservatism of luthiers is probably market driven, but I think people used to be more adventurous. Someone had to make the first Frying Pan, someone had to buy it and Rickenbacker (and Leo and Les Paul and Bigsby and all them) made a 2nd guitar and a 3rd and so on. Even though the market back then was all about hollowbodies for jazz players.

Corrugated Iron guitar? Hell yeah!
There's nothing really radical here except the Matsuda and the last two are there to acknowledge the amazing craftsmanship.

I see odd looking acoustics, and I think that they need to be played differently. I haven't even mastered the normal shape ones yet.

Yes it appears I'm on the conservative side of things, not much appeals to me there. My idea of trying something different would be a bright colour on something made by Fender or Gibson in the 50s!
