NGD
Been a while I think so I'll do a NGD for the John Mayer Strat.
This one's about eleven years old. Nicer than my last one in that it's just a two-piece body. The last one had an obvious join that showed above the top curve of the pickguard and just looked shit. It's quite light too at just 7.6lbs. I never like the white dots so dab them with a stain to darken them a little. Don't know if you can tell in the pics. I like the pickups but recall last time I preferred my CS69 set so might yet change them. I'll probably buy an unpotted set of something. Anyway, here it is. I commend it to The House.

Re: NGD
Besides the usual modern / vintage spec differences, compared to a Standard it's got a slightly bigger neck profile, bigger frets (well, that might not now be the case as the Standard seems to have big frets), Big Dipper pickups, string retainer is further from the nut to reduce friction (doubt it does much), decent trem/block, and that's about it. It's just a vintage spec Strat really but, like the EJ, seems well put finished and put together.HackSaw wrote:That looks great! Excuse my ignorance, but what's a John Mayer strat, vs a std for example?
The other Strat in the pics is different in just about every way.

Don't like mr mayer, or strats, but it's a very inspiring looking thing isn't it?

Re: NGD
'e woz dreamin'... It does feel played it as it 'appens. Edges feel rolled. Maybe a previous owner had it properly set-up. The price was good but I think that's about where they should be. Under $2k for sure. And I still think that that's about where you get the best return for your money. Diminished returns an' all that.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote:11 years old but looks brand new, does it feel played in? You got a good deal, there was another guy trying to sell one on TM for ages and he was asking $2,800.
Suspect if we knew more about a lot of successful musicians we might also dislike them. Read one of Clapton's biogs and he really didn't come out well. I try not to be too judgy as you can't know what it's like to handle that sort of success and they've no real control over what's said about them. But, yes, Mr Mayer has said some wank things in his time. All that aside, he's a f'kin' tidy guitar player with a great tone and I really like some of his songs (I skip quite a few too - the ones for pre-menopausal wimmin).Single coil wrote:Don't like mr mayer, or strats, but it's a very inspiring looking thing isn't it?
He did a series of MIT lectures about defining success etc. He's an articulate bloke. They were an interesting watch.

Eh his stuff just doesn't do it for me. Same with srv. Having played a signature model it was really nice.

That's a good looking guitar, that is. Hope you enjoy it.

Re: NGD
I like the green one best.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
