Fender American Original Series
So Fender replaces the American Vintage Series with the American Original Series.

It's OK. They're just trying to stimulate and rejuvenate their brand, keep sales coming in and keep interest in their product up.
Mmm Fenders. Dying for another Strat.

Re: Fender American Original Series
I like the fact that they have got the larger frets. It seems like a good idea to do that - as larger frets would be more popular than vintage frets wouldn't they?

I think larger frets are generally more popular, yeah. Part of me thinks they should be vintage spec the whole way - vintage radius, little frets - but that would alienate a lot of people I imagine.

Re: Fender American Original Series
I know lots of people like the large fret size on these, so that's cool for them. I'm a vintage-size frets for life guy. I don't like: 9.5" radius, 6105 frets, lack of matching headstock on Jaguars and Jazzmasters with D&B necks (it just looks wrong! With an unbound neck it is OK because the earliest ones Fender made didn't have matching headstocks), poly undercoat with nitro top coat (the American Vintage line (from 2012) had pure nitro finishes called 'flash coat nitro' which are just amazing). The last point is very minor though. A few of my favourite guitars are AVRI62s and they have the same poly under/nitro top finish.
I'm glad I bought all the AVRI/AV guitars I wanted before they discontinued them. They will only become harder and harder to find for a decent price, especially in good condition.

That's how they made them for the last 35 years. But I guess times have finally changed, in regard to the market for such vintage spec pieces. The sales just must have fallen off a cliff.telefiend wrote:Part of me thinks they should be vintage spec the whole way - vintage radius, little frets - but that would alienate a lot of people I imagine.

I suppose a lot of people who prefer vintage specs probably just buy vintage guitars?sunburster wrote:That's how they made them for the last 35 years. Re: Fender American Original Series
I think I need to hold one and play one before I could decide.
I’d consider myself a vintage spec guy with offsets and yes, matching headstocks are important.
However after a long time gigging with my 64 jag I had a custom harvester jm style built. Now, that thing has a set neck, 9.5” radius and larger than vintage frets. I can tell you, that by the third set of gigging , particularly as the tunes are getting more frantic and the hands are getting tired I really appreciate the added ‘ease’ of playability from the modern specs. Put me in my living room with a glass of wine, my favorite slippers and a guitar to noodle on and admire then I’m happier with vintage spec.
Sometimes I’ll use my jag for the first half of a gig then switch over.
So for me, these new fenders could well be great gigging guitars , even if they fall short of satisfying vintage nerds. And all the better if that means they can be picked up cheap.
That blue jm with tort looks beautiful.

Re: Fender American Original Series
I liked the Am Vintage Series tho'. Loved the vintage frets, neck radius, pups, finish etc, Was nice to think I could buy a vintage spec guitar (once in a blue moon). Disappointed that they've discontinued it. The Vintage Series gats will become harder to acquire.
