Re: Tokai LP - what a difference nicel covers make
Do you mean sound of covered versus uncovered, or nickel plating versus chrome? I figure looks.
I have had Les Paul and SGs with both setups. My ears are not the most sensitive, so i can't say that i hear much difference tbh. That said, i have not owned both at the same time, so this is based on memory -- which is also not in the best working order.
I went thru a stage of liking the hot rod Zebra pups look. But I shifted beyond that phase and now like the look of covered pups more currently.

Yeah just looks really, covered Vs uncovered. Didn't notice much sound difference TBH, it possibly may be a little warmer/smoother with them on but that's very marginal if at all.Aquila Rossa wrote:Do you mean sound of covered versus uncovered, or nickel plating versus chrome? I figure looks.

Re: Tokai LP - what a difference nicel covers make
I find pickup height makes much more difference. Some say to pull the screws out and that sounds different. I dunno. Joe Walsh did a 'how to setup your Les Paul' video for Guitar World. He likes to adjust the height so all strings sound more equally playing a chord (tilting it). He said others disagree 'but their tone is not as good as mine', which i thought was funny. He does have very good tone at times though.Mini Forklift Ⓥ wrote:Yeah just looks really, covered Vs uncovered. For looks it seems to depend on what era guitar playing I have been getting into lately and trying to rip off. When i was into zebras i was more into ripping off 80s players who played modded guitars. For some reason that changed the way i see them and made me like zebras more at the time.

I find the covers kill the highs a bit, be interesting to see if you have to turn the trebles up!

Interesting. So maybe there is some merit in me believing that it now sounds a bit more mellow and smooth?..jeremyb wrote:I find the covers kill the highs a bit, be interesting to see if you have to turn the trebles up!

I've never noticed any differences. But I have tin ears.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

It’ll nob off some highs but nothing to write home about.
Removing pole piece screws is a fun time but not for everyone.
I like both.

I have noticed huge tone differences between cover and uncover duncan JB's in the past...uncovered have always sounded way better for me. I think "cutting of high end with covered" might be a "thing"

Re: Tokai LP - what a difference nicel covers make
Yeah I watched a BKP comparison video before ordering these white pickups. The covered ones sounded a bit softer to me and these were 10 quids more each, surely I ain't gonna spend extra 20 quids to have my guitar sound softer...willow13 wrote:I have noticed huge tone differences between cover and uncover duncan JB's in the past...uncovered have always sounded way better for me.
