It depends. It sounds a touch better if I run it through a power amp with cab sims off into a real cab. In fact, it sounds absolutely killer run that way. It does sound really really good through the PA as well, but that way I don't get the sound of the backline which is kind of what my ears are used to. I guess I'm just used to running a cab with this band.
I like having options. In the future I am going to test it by going through the PA only and see how that goes, but at my last gig the sound guy ran out of mic channels which doesn't fill me with confidence.
Also there is the cool factor of having an amp/cab on stage...

That's how I like to run it. Fx loop out to the return of my amp and cab setup, Out 1 with cab sim to FOH. Still get the coolness factor and your own stage sound.
It's interesting how the different amp models react to different amps power sections.

Totally.
One other thing is that the little egnater amp head I have can be run at 4/8/16 ohms which is handy. I know the pedals are pretty versatile too, but just saying - I have had to use that switch several times depending on the cab that's available.

I have a tech21 British as an amp backup, and if my pedal goes down, I can use it as a distortion/solo boost. No FX,but I can get through a gig without. And spare cables of course.
I used this pedal as a pre-amp for my bass for years. Sounded bloody fantastic running straight into a solid-state Behringer power amplifier, and the most reliable rig I ever had.

Spring is the comic sans of reverbs anyway.
