So... Customs vs Standards. Is there more than meets the eye or does one just carry more plastic bling than the other?
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

I think the pre-67 Customs are all mahogany (no maple cap). DongHua's R7 Custom should be solid mahogany.

Yip, R7bb is solid mahogany with no maple cap, plus a huge neck size of my forearm lol. It’s a beast. My r9 is slightly smaller but still huge round C

If you are talking about R9, then R9/R0 just totally next level shit, far superior tone wood even you can tell unplugged.

But I play my R7BB more often than my R9 because of the “plastic bling”

I should probably have said the solid mahogany Les Paul shaped Custom's are from pre-61. From 61-68 the Les Paul Custom was an SG shape, when the Les Paul shaped Custom returned in 68 they had the maple cap.

And current production 68s are chabered/weight reliefed I think?

Btw,

Not sure if any old NZG nerds could remember, but user PhilipNZ’s fancy LP custom with crazy flame top was my favorite Les Paul of all time. Too bad I couldn’t find any picture of that particular guitar.

They do seem to sound markedly different. Generally the Customs have more bite and aggression, all things being equal. Maple neck on mine probably contributes to some of the aggression of mine, but it seems to be a theme.

Ebony board snaps things up.

Modern run non CS customs have a maple top. Special CS runs are all mahogany.

In the past they have used heavier wood for customs too...something to do with Les’ desire for sustain I read somewhere.

I had a 68 RI Custom for a while...clowny and massive sounding. And yes, I believe it was chambered. I can't even remember where I got that from? Mister B, can you?
