Advice wanted: Gibson r8

Post by Kiwiaxe »

So I’m loving my new Gibson but I’m still lusting over a gold top R8.

There’s been one on TM recently that passed in at $5k (non original pickups - had OX4 instead). There’s also been one sitting unsold for quite a bit more than that.

What’s the going rate on them nowadays?

Do you mean R7 Goldtop? I'm not sure that I've ever seen an R8 Goldtop for sale in NZ. Weren't they sort of made-to-order rather than mass produced?

The one on TM is an R7 goldtop. A bit weird that they don't allow pick up, isn't it? Maybe not... maybe just relative to the price...

I think it depends on the year since the retail price on these kept going up especially since 2013. But I wouldn't pay current price on an older one for sure.

Oh this is Chopper. Had a little hissy fit on the forum earlier this year. He bought it off another forumite and didn't appreciate us suggesting that he was flipping for profit (although with very limited success).

I'd personally steer clear.

Yeah he bought it from me, I sold it to him for a god price and literally within weeks he had it up on TM for a couple of grand more than what paid for it. It rubbed me up the wrong way because he haggled me down to a good price with a story that it was just what he was looking for, it'll be going to a good home etc etc. He must have had it up on TM for most of this year, there's been a few equally as good that have sold around the $5k mark or slightly less so I'd just hang tight. Seems to be a few nice LP's being listed at the moment
