Offset nitro checking porn

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

Thought I'd post my experiences getting 23 yr old nitro to check...
And a bit of offset porn for those intersted

I like patina and wear on my guitars. This is a faded pink JM and has been my main everything guitar for the past 6-7 years.
It has a JL telemaster bridge PUP and a JL hot JM neck PUP. It does everything youd want a JM to do include tip over where ever you lean it.
The only thing it hasnt done is cevelop anything more than the very faintest of finish checking.

So the other night I started on a four day crusade to get some checking to happen.

I stripped the body and popped it in the freezer over night. The neck morning I was pretty dissapointed to see that not much had happened. As it sat out it started to get condensation on it so I popped it in the hot airing cupboard for the day. That night I repeated the freezer process.
The nect morning it had developed very nice checking lines! Success!....err no...as soon as it warmed up they all but disapeared. I figured they were so fine and the colour so light that they were just closing up again. So I did the same thing again but the next morning while it was still frozen cold (and there fore had open cracks) I massaged wet espresso grounds firmly into the finish.

The headstock was even more resistant to my advances, and a whole can of compressed air dust spray later still looked shop new. That too took a couple of days of rotating between hot and cold to get the fissures to remain patent.

And here is the end result :)

Yeh I’m very happy with it. It just looks right to me now. And to be fair the finish is so faded from a crazy cool shell pink that I wasn’t too worried because if it failed and screwed it up I’m happy to refin it one day

This was an excellent demonstration of compressed air being able to give a similar effect to slower methods, at least in al older guitar. Minimal spider-web effect.

Yes good point
As I wasn’t keen to put the entire neck in the freezer being worried it would warp it, loosen frets or delaminate the fretboard m, I used cold spray. It did take quite a lot of time but I got there.

With an added whiff of Java; brilliant!
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.
