Same here. Never heard originals in real life. "PAF" to me is about balance. Not as shrill as a Tele (or even Filtertron). More full lower mids that a Strat but not muddy. Still has a little bit of top-end sparkle. Higher output than vintage-style single coils, but still has enough headroom for picking dynamics to show through.

I'm sure that PAFs vary and may not even resemble what I've described. But if I'm looking for humbuckers that meet those characteristics, Super 58 and Custombuckers are when I'd look.
You mentioned you have Super 58s in your Ibanez. What year are those ones? Are they the original pickups in that guitar?

I'd love to compare my A3 pickups with the older Super 58s and Custombuckers. Damn hard to find anyone with those around here!
It's a Ibanez LR-10, basically the signature model of Lee Ritenour form the early 80s. It has custom-voiced Super 58s that are a touch hotter than standard. I have them set relatively low and they're fantastic.
That does sound interesting. I think mine can do with a bit more heat.

I wonder how many of the LPs on this thread has Custombuckers in them.

Visit Auckland. Oleg and I have a few Super58 guitars between us. Mine are original 1982.
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

You might like the Yamaha SA2000 pickups then too. Slowy don't talk much about humbuckers but he did like those.

Didn't some of the SA-2000 guitars have Super 58 pickups? Or at least a version of them?

I think both Yamaha and Ibanez were trying to create something PAFfie in the 70s but each did their own stuff. Never heard of any collaboration.

You are welcome to try it out next time you are in Auckland.

Might just do that.

Looks like the Super 58s were commonly swapped into Yamaha guitars of the era, which is why some used examples have them.

2011-ish Traditional. Had a large 50's style neck. Great guitar. Too shiny for me.

To be honest, I think there'd be worse investments out there. Maybe not at $38k, but at $25k I'd be taking a closer look.

Hypothetically, of course. I'm budgeting to afford stick of gum at the moment.

Pretty sure that was $25k the first time I saw it. Rockshop had that pair and also one of the limited run Clapton Blackies. Might still have that too.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Yeah, Blackie is still there. It was entirely unremarkable when I played it.

I'm John Lee Hooker in the sense that he was a blues man and he played blues his whole life. I'm a rock guy and I'm going to play rock music my whole life.
