Guitar tech in Chch?

Post by Cochise »

Hi all,

I was hoping someone could let me know the details of anyone they know of in Chch that knows his/her Les Pauls and is in the business of setting them up etc.

Cheers guys

Alan Farrow - Ph. 9606979. Nice guy. He's the guy that the local music stores use, but if you go direct you don't pay their markup. :-)

Peter Stephen - 328 8033

He's in Lyttelton, He is a guitar maker, I had a play on one of his LP style guitars and it was incredible! I had him set up my Ibanez RG, and he did a superb job on it. Was a good price too.

This is good to know, I always knew they used one common guy, but didn't know who it was. Will look him up when I get back, my Kelly desperately needs a good "shredderific" setup. ;)

Wow, more cool info. I always thought Peter Stephen was too big time (making guitars n all that) to do tech work, but guess I was wrong.

That's good to know. What does he charge for a basic setup?

I think I paid $195 for a Full setup, including filing and re-crowning the frets. This was a floyd rose based gat. He put a lot of work in, and I also had him do it high priority, so I think I may have been charged a little extra. The neck was in pretty bad shape when I took it to him.

i paid 150 for a floyd setup, which included re-drilling the floyd binding posts/re-aligning the bridge as well as filing the frets, etc and i have to say it has the lowest playable action ive ever experienced-which is what i asked for.i've had a few bad runs with al,including one set-up which had the wrong guage strings and subsequent buzz, right before i went on tour.if it's something simple go to al,if you want a professional job,go to peter.

+1 for Allan Farrow, ive been taking my toys to him for 12 or so years for setups, fretwork, pickup work, rewiring etc. He used to be the resident Mr.Fixit at CJs Music.

I know this is a 10 year old forum, but just had to say, I dropped my floyd rose strat in to Alan for a pickup installation and setup and that dude is still super cheap... what a bargain... I'll update on how good a job he does but I've heard good things.
