One day eight years ago – having listened to excerpts from films including The Matrix with his elaborate home-theatre set-up the previous night – Munson awoke with "my head in a ball of sound," he said. The ringing worsened over time, spreading from one ear to both and expanding from one steady tone to several fluctuating ones. This time, the ringing didn't go away. Instead, it worsened over time.
Soon afterward, Munson also developed mild hyperacusis – a sensitivity that renders everyday noises uncomfortably loud or even painful. He describes his tinnitus as a screaming, constant multi-tone with no real-world correlation. Now he gets an ache in the ear canal from the hum of the refrigerator and the snap of a pop top. To avoid clinking dishware, which causes him ear pain, his family eats from paper plates.
The home theatre gathers dust.
"Your ears have a budget," he said. "Spend it too quickly and you're broke."

Ugh, something to look forward to in my latter years.
Hopefully by the time it becomes a problem they will have perfected nanotechnology to fix it!

I'm very consistent about ear protection at work etc, but I really need to get my ass into gear and get some plugs for practise.

Ah, why thank you. It's my 2012 AmStd, one of the special runs they do; ash body. Managed to take a coupla decent photos.

At work, get caught without earplugs too often and you get a written warning. They also bring in a lady to do hearing tests in a special room in the nurse's hut.

Listening to music on headphones is a more insipid, but just as dangerous cause. You have to be extremely careful as the drivers are so close to your ears. If you're regularly wearing headphones in a loud environment, make sure that they form a decent seal to block out as much of the outside noise as possible. If they don't, you'll crank the level so you can hear the music over the background noise and will quickly be pumping large dBSPLs into your ear canal. If someone on the other side of the train can hear what you're listening to, you're probably fucked.

It does get tempting when jogging by the roadside. I just turn them off when the road noise is too much.

I do. I've had it since early 20s from surfing in cold water. It doesn't bother me as it is not very loud.

I get the occasional hint of it, but only at night. Have had it since working on a big film about 12 years ago. Got aggravated mixing commercials, but have kept a very close eye/ear on it since.

I have had it since my twenties too, playing in a concrete garage without sound absorbing material did not help. Parties with loud music, etc. I "hear" two different frequencies, 24/7. I have learned to not focus on it else it can drive you mad. One frequency matches the chirping of the Crickets, so I don't hear them with one ear. Quite convenient at times
Not sure how cold water/surfing can cause this??

What about Lemmy?
FAR louder and for decades.
I suffer mild tinnitus, foolishly not wearing hearing protection when playing with a band.
These days I won't attend a concert without them.
However the Ace Frehley gig recently was so loud my hearing was fucked for almost a week.
And that's with wearing 30 db plugs......oooooof
Nowadays I'm reluctant to go to concerts & even wear moulded earplugs to gearfests.
