Talk to Marcus. He has heaps of them. You never know....
Hofners?
Actually, mostly Stellas. :eh:

Typical of his style, he's leaving for Easter Island tomorrow. I'll find out when he's back.

At that price  Get yourself one of these on ebay for less than $100, solid birch and ladder braced, great blues sound on slide. My two

I love the fingerboard inlays on these. Really cool designs.

Sorry to disappoint, but no inlays, just painted stencils. They look good though. :) These were the cheapest guitars from around 1930 up to the '70s, and the birch construction and ladder bracing gave that dry blues sound. Lots of songs on these on palours, concert size and 12 strings.

Sothe Stellars have real chunky necks with no truss rod like the Hofners?

They have a steel rod in the neck, but not adjustable. They are small 3/4 guitars with a big sound. Necks are not big and short scale like the old time parlours. There were lots of models but basically they were all the same, solid birch with different colours, poplar or mahogany neck. This the 929 was the most common, but they came in lots of colours and stencils from Hawaiian, Cowboy to faux woods.

This will explain a little better

I never knew they were solid birch, I thought the body was made out of thin custom wood! I suppose that goes some way to explaining why such a cheap little guitar sounds so good.

Back when these were made, customwood was futuristic and birch was cheap.

I love how this thread has morphed from an old Hofner classical to how awesome 50s/60s Stellas are. Awesome!

Haha, I suspected they might simply be painted on. It bothers me not.

Could probably sell my A&L parlour, get one of these in from the US, have a cool old guitar, and profit.

Picked one up the other day for $55 US. You need to be a little careful, they can be prone to warping around the sound hole. The H929 of mine (the tiger stripe one), action was a little high, so I did a hippy neck reset. Tidied it up fine. New rosewood bridge with a brass fret saddle, its a winner. Original bridges are pretty soft, most likely poplar.

I played the Hofner again today. It's far from a perfect guitar, but for that open tuning delta blues stuff it's so good, so much character. Shame it's not for sale.
