Old SG's

Post by GrantB »

I know - SG wankery all round presently...which is a good reason to pile on some more.

Finally, no kids and distractions...so, here's the clan. It's a big pic so sorry about those on iPhones!!! It's weird how the left and right gats look wider...of course, they aren't.

We've got left to right, an early '63 "Les Paul Junior" Grovered, then a '64 SG Junior, an early '65 SG Standard and finally a mid '65 SG Special.

All have 1 11/16ths nuts - the Special slightly more.

The '63 Jr has a massive neck...fat and wide. It's a monster. The '64 has the neck to die for. The Standard has an 8.4K Pat No in the bridge and an 8.2K in the neck...quite hot. It's very "chimey". The '63 Jr has a huge bottom end sound, whereas the 64 Jr is twangy...but, that might be the Lollar P90 (all others are original p/ups). Only the Special sports its own p/guard for outings...and its warped. All others have Dan's guards from MojoAxe and lightning bridges (originals in cases - and Dan is great to work with...note the 7 vs 8 screw guards on the Jnr's!). The Standard has a modern TOM, the original nylon saddled bridge is not edgy enough for me. The Special usually has the Maestro on, but recently I took it off to see how it changed the sound. As expected it's more "full" now, but I actually prefer the tone I get from the Maestro - next string change back it goes.

If you can't tell, I love SG's!

Beautiful. But yes what happened to the white '62 SG Special Grant?

I would post my red '64 special but it's a refinish, unworthy in my eyes compared to the beauty already on display in this thread!

You actually have a garden! I thought your idea of domestic landscaping was acres of grass and a big wet patch. :P
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

'64 SG Special. 'Sparkling burgundy' refinish. Original pickguard warped and slot cut out on the bottom left to accomodate an earlier larger fully compensated/adjustable wrap-around bridge (Schaller?). The original bridge is in the picture but I have a pigtail wraparound on it currently (thanks Grant!).
