Love those Epi Coronets and Olympics, wicked slide guitars. Unfortunately they have moved out of pawn shops into high end guitar shops in recent years.
Admirable gesture Mr B, respect..
I have a rather tacky 90' Coronet I bought cheaply for slide, after replacing the bridge HB with a p90, sounds fantastic. Fuggliest thing I've ever owned, so I just close my eyes and play it...

I've started removing the old finish from the body of the guitar. For the most part it had already been removed from the front. Most of the remaining finish is on the edges, as a lot of you know, the worst bit to sand! Due to how thin the lacquer is i'm not going to scrape it, i'm using 320 grit sandpaper (very fine) and taking my time. I don't want to remove any of the 'sharpness' of the sides curve where it meets the front or back. Here's a photo showing some of that lovely 48 year old Mahogany....

I'd take some more photos but the battery just died on the camera. It's going to take a while but the process has begun!

Yep, they're on the up. Still see the odd Olympic on ebay around 1500/1700.

I content myself with this ugly but effective substitute ( may get round to putting a wraptail on it one day )

Bit of an update here. Most of the sanding is now done. Here's the front;

And the back;
phpe3sIB5PM.jpg
I've managed to save the serial number on the back of the headstock so i'm now toying with the idea of a natural finish on the back of the headstock and black everywhere else,
phpkKYWjvPM.jpg
I've seen a few Gibsons with headstocks painted on the back in a 'V' shape to natural on the neck. Might do a reverse of that so the guitar keeps a bit of it's history.

Here's the front of the headstock with some PAL 'eezee' woodfiller in 'mahogany' being used to fill some old string tree holes and so forth. As you can see the colour match is pretty much perfect :mental:.

The small area of original black on the bottom of the batwing might stay, even though it's small i'd like to keep a little bit of the original finish. There's a little more sanding to go, then it's time for routing!

Nice, great work. Yeah, keep a bit of the history. Natural finish on the back of the headstock to preserve that serial number. Or screw a clear cover over the serial so it can be seen and paint the rest, to highlight it.

Looking good.
Could always have saved some sawdust to use as filler with glue.
