Guitar Bandwidth Requirements?

Post by Eruera »

I'm working on a buffer design, with a few twists, to use as my pedalboard interface and just need to tune the bandwidth. I figure that around 80hz for the HPF would be, but what would be optimal for the upper corner in order to minimise HF noise while still sounding transparent? I'm figuring on using first order filters, any thoughts on that?

I would say that 80hz for the HPF is too high - an open E is 83hz. What if you ever want to tune down to drop D or lower?

As for the top, I’d start by trying 6k

Hmmm looking at some common guitar buffers they seem to be rolling off around 80Hz, gotta remember it's first order so it's not gonna have much effect in the 80-60Hz band. Interestingly none of them have a LPF, the passband goes to 20kHz and beyond! I would have thought that this was a recipe for noise, but I suppose the guitar speakers roll off pretty sharply in the HF so it doesn't matter so much

most RF noise is above 20khz anyway.
If you really wanted to be careful about noise you could roll off highs at around 12k without a noticeably huge loss. Might make super spanky clean strat sounds lose a bit of presence but other than that no major biggie.
