Mammoth J201 Clean Boost - build

Post by sirvill »

Bought one of these yesterday - http://www.mammothelectronics.com/J201- ... -j201b.htm

Figured it'd be a good intro into this kind of stuff, relatively cheap, and seems to sound pretty good too from their demo.

Will update this as things progress!

Looking forwards to updates -- most boosts I've seen use 2N5457, or BS170. J201 has been discontinued in a through-hole package (still available in SMD -- several people have created tiny little adaptor boards now.)

Its coming painted already too - mainly so I can focus on the build aspects.

Who knows when it'll arrive but I can't wait to unbox.

They're not being manufactured any more in thru-hole -- stocks haven't run out yet in that packaging.

Do mammoth not ship kits direct? Or was it cheaper through you shop?

Also, welcome to the gang, be warned, it starts off as a simple kit but you wake up in a few years and your internet favourites are full of schematics, you frequent multiple building forums, you collect near obsolete parts just in case, and you have to buy storage solutions for future projects and bulk resistors you bought.

I wouldn't change a thing

Haha, thanks! :D

Yeah I think its cheaper/more secure - the cheapest international shipping from Mammoth was $17 US, and the description was "Regular Post, not tracked, can take up to two months". I didn't like the sound of that :)

YouShop cost me $17NZ, so plus the US$5 to ship it to the distro centre, it seemed not much price difference for a bit more security.

I got to about 7/8s of the way through last night before calling it quits.

This shit is HARD. Especially for a fine motor klutz like me.

Hopefully I'll finish it off tonight and get some pics up. (FYI - the insides DO NOT look pretty. I just hope I haven't broken anything lol).

Like anything, it's a matter of practice.

Well, got it all in the enclosure, and... No sound :(

LED works so I guess the foot switch is the right way round. Must be a dodgy wire somewhere - caps and resistors are probably fine, they were easy as to install.

So I guess it's time to rewire it and try again :(
