[SORTED] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
Aite, I'm tryna build a two button switch for my vk212.
It came with one, but it's a big bastard and angled and won't sit still if velcroed.
So, down to jaycar I went for the smaller enclosure and so on.
There were no guitar style stereo jacks, so I've got these weirdo 5 prong stereo things instead (because I have the patience and attention span of a moth).
I'll post pictures once the hosting thing is playing the game so sit tight - my question is, how the hell do they work?
Middle prong is ground but what do I do with the other four?
I've managed to get it to switch channels with one button, and the other will only revert to clean. I can't get the gain boost to work.
... I mean I don't need it but I'd rather do it properly.
I'm quite sure the cable I am using is not at fault.

Re: [HALP] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
Why not move the guts of the old one into the new enclosure?

Would be much easier.jeremyb wrote:Why not move the guts of the old one into the new enclosure?
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Re: [HALP] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
You're right, it would be - and that's why I'm not doing it.
Picture up now.
The old one also had the cable hardwired into it, and I want a jack on the new one I can unplug.

How many pins do you need? What was in the cable before? Is a stereo Jack enough? If you want grown up jacks, get them from RS, free freight and cheaper. (Future ref.) do you have a multimeter? With a tone on it? A lightbulb and a battery, an led and a battery, he'll a torch and some alligator clips, any of these will enable you to check the pins on that thing. They are all made different, this one is likely switching something, tip maybe, or perhaps an independent switch on insert???? Anyway draw up what you need, and see if what you have matches it.

Re: [HALP] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
Just looked up vk212 pedal, stereo is not the problem, jaycar said site tells nothing of your switch, assuming it is the stereo one, then I think it is switched as described above, two of the pins connect or disconnect as the Jack is inserted, and this has nothing to do with the the audio. You need to id those pins, as above, lamp, meter. Are you adding LEDs? Inline with the circuit or seperate? If seperate, on seperate power, then this switch could be useful for disconnecting power when not in use. Good luck.

Hoooooly.
In order of appearance:
3 pins,
2 wires + ground,
yes stereo is enough,
no multimeter
[...]
jaycar site is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike,
yes it's stereo and switched,
no led's,
here's a picture of a simple diagram I can understand.
Edit: pissing around with image host, again
Edit again: I give up, here's the link

Gave up and bought more actual trs jacks.
Who woulda thought there was more than one electronics shop in whangarei!
Gain boost still won't go. Bleh.

Not trying to be salty, but, you can open up the vk212 box and copy it right? You've done that but it's no joy? Pics of your work may be required.
Here's what the inside of a bandit switch looks like...

You are correct.
Ground in that image goes to a different lug, so will give that a hoon tomorrow.

Re: [HALP] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
I lied about what day I'd try it.
I have 6 pole DPDT switches rather than the two pole things in the picture.
https://www.jaycar.co.nz/heavy-duty-dpd ... h/p/SP0764
Tried a similar looking peavey thing too; also has two pole switches.
I have tried various poles and still can't get gain boost to go. It works with the button on the amp so we can rule that out lol

Re: [HALP] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
the switch you have is DPDT, Double pole double throw, that is two switches with the same button to flick them, if you hold it so you have this (apologise for the crappy notation)
3E
the 3 is one switch the E is another
you only need two poles, so provided you didnt accidentally get momentary one (I dont think its possible from Jaycar, but who knows) you want the middle of one side and the top or bottom of the same side. wire the earth (sleave) to the middle, and the tip or ring to the other. then do the same on the other side.
if you wire the earth to the middle on both you should be fine.
now if we achieve this, you could get fancy, and wire up LEDs on the spare switches (the 3 or E depending on what you did before.) and this little box could have it's own 9v for that, it will last years, as all it does is light up lights. or not... but the whole point of DIY is to make it flash, with lights.
so the key points, sleave to both switches (one side of each switch)
ring to one side of one switch
Tip to one side of one switch
make sure you are using a stereo cable, if you use a normal guitar lead, it will not work!!! as it will short the tip and ring.

Re: [HALP] Scrambled eggs tier switch build
Yeah nah using a trs cable too, learnt that one a while ago.
Going off that explanation I think I've got my earth in the wrong place - schoolboy error.
I'll have another tuttu with it.
In other news, at least the enclosure came up ok.
