I have a Ruby and a Gem that I want to put into a normal pedal box with a footswitch to switch between them like a two-channel amp. It could also be used as a beast overdrive pedal on the pedal board or plug straight into a speaker cab.

in the 'used as a pedal' situation, what's the impedance situation there? what's the input impedance of the average amp?

Amp impedance is a few hundred times higher than a speaker.
The LM386 is still just an Op-amp, it just has much higher current capacity than a normal one and thus is capable of driving a low impedance load like a speaker directly. Tried it, works quite well.

I'm gonna build a noisy cricket MKII now instead of the ruby, gutted an old computer speaker subwoofer to use as the box, should be mean has a nice wee ~5" 8ohm 8W speaker in it
