Custom Home for a DeVille
Looks like Bg's been having all of the fun around here, so I thought I'd throw one of my monstrosities into the mix.
A while back I acquired an older USA Fender DeVille that was in pretty rough cosmetic shape. I'm not sure who the original owner was, but it looks like they gave her a pretty wild youth.
But the interior was clean and it sounded great, so I decided to give it a new home.
I'm a hand tool kind of guy, so the joints are all hand cut the old fashioned way with dovetail saw and chisel.
With a fresh set of tubes, the input jacks replaced, and a thorough going-over by Clarry, it's like a whole new beast!

Wow, great work. That looks stunning - quite the transformation. I am quite jealous of the skill sets that many of you possess on here

I'm just happy to cover my mistakes with tolex or tweed

Any shots of the back? looks like a complete separate panel?

Hey, thanks for the kind words, dudes!
Ha, right... I'm not seeing too many major mishaps in your work, man!Bg wrote:I'm just happy to cover my mistakes with tolex or tweed

Here's the back... nothing too special, except for some cool figure in the cypress. It's just a panel with shielding tape that bolts on to the chassis. The velcro is for a master volume box I made that sits in the effects loop.Bg wrote:Any shots of the back? looks like a complete separate panel?

Sweet detail on those dovetails I'll echo. My OCD wanting hard to see some generous edging radius though

It looks cool with the natural wood finish, but being a DeVille surely it needs a Dalmation fur covering?

Re: Custom Home for a DeVille
that looks the biz mate
when i served my apprenticeship many moons and beers ago we spent the first week learning how to plane a piece of roughsawn 3b2 square
then we moved onto making window frames and welsh dressers ext
dovetail joints are the most satisfying bit of carpentry out there and thoroughly enjoyed it

Yeah, I agree. On handmade boxes, cabinetry, etc. a planed chamfer is traditional, but it looks a bit out of place on an amp. I'm making a similar 1x12 cabinet and I think I'll dig out the ol' roundover bit for that one.calling card wrote:Sweet detail on those dovetails I'll echo.
