Building 1x12 cab

Post by crowbgood1 »

I'm going to build a speaker cab. 1x12.
Where is a good place to buy materials ( tolex, vinyl, handles, etc)

Any opinions on timber? Solid or ply? 12 ply is what I'm thinking of using.

Livesound.co.nz is an excellent place to get cabinet hardware (handles, corners etc). You can't order it online but have a look at http://www.penn-elcom.com/ (livesound stock their stuff), find what you need and send the part numbers in a product enquiry and they'll sort you out. They're really reasonably priced, have a fair bit in stock and will ship quickly.

Ryan at customaudioboutique.co.nz (forum member) has some tolex and grill cloth.

I used vinyl from spotlight to cover mine.

For sure. It's easy to transform them into the same dimensions as the Mesa boogie ported Thiele 1x12" cabinet.

Sweet mate. It seems to be taking a while to arrive but when it does I'll get it out to you. I think I might have found it on the EV website somewhere but I can't remember.

Haha, fisherman eh?

I worked at sea for 12 years, mostly on a big factory trawler namer Sea Hunter 1. They sold it after 10 years when fuel prices got too high. I miss it. Might be going back to sea later this year though.
Who do you work for?

I'm watching with interest, because I'd like to build a cab with H30s later this year. (yep, I heard them in the capts cab, and are gassing for them too.)

If you want to use ply then plyman has a good range. We have found Gaboon ply to be excellent and void free.
