DIY Soldano

Post by jeremyb »

Incredibly tempting to buy their gear bit by bit to build one up, about $1600 US all up to make a 50W SLO, plus a bit more to get the bits here but gives you a ballpark... But for that cash I could buy a 5150III... http://www.c3amps.com/

tasty, I may have a dabble on the mk2+ but a bit offput by " Full version of the *verified* schematics - by e-mail" so are they verified or not?
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I think they want you to buy the parts thru them, rather than make the schematics public domain ;)

A member of this forum has built an SLO Clone and was working on the schematic for a mark 2C+ a few years ago. Neither are a good starting point for amp building and for $1600 USD I'd rather get a secondhand Soldano hot rod head on trademe for under 1500 NZD (and there have been a few) it doesn't quite get into SLO100 territory but they aren't worlds apart. NZRS_Matt has played/owned both and he talked about the differences in a thread a while back, if you use the search function you might find it. There are differences for sure, but can the audience tell the difference? Nah..

I should also mention that Soldanos are completely unforgiving amps and the smallest mistake is easily heard, can be a wake up call for people who are used to playing saturated high gain amps (Rectifiers and the like!)

YMMV

I have faith in you JB!

Buuuuut, being able to buy the 5150 you want for the price of a kit?... Hmm, I think I'd have the 5150.

This!!!

Quite a few used Soldano Hot Rods floating around NZ for very good prices from time to time. You can get a great amp (the real deal) AND you can sleep at night knowing you're not ripping off Mike Soldanos IP.

Hot Rod < SLO, but not by a long way.

Nice experience, with the SLOCLONE 100W. My friend bought the components needed and we built it together. The amp sounds good and are preferred by which we test my pedals. Last year we published four videos on Youtube (write ASAR sloclone in the search engine), playing with the SLOCLONE and the prototype of one of my boosters.

What transformers did you use for this clone?

How have you implemented "Heaters Mod"? 1M + 100K as generally indicated?
Have you tried the "ECC81/12AT7 Phase Splitter Mod" (not simply replacing the 12AX7 with 12AT7, of course)?
