My first power amplifier

Post by ASAR »

Image

It was 2005 AD, and this was the first amplifier (prototype) designed by myself, which is derived from the schema of the Audio Note "Ongaku".
I go to my guitarist friend to test it: Ibanez JEM 77, Marshall JMP-1 preamp, ACE OF SPADES (ASSO DI PICCHE), Marshall 4x12.
Wonderful experience. Very significant for me.

Audio amps seem to use a wide and weird array of valves, compared to guitar amps (where preamps are usually 12A[xtuy]7, and power valves are either EL[38]4, KT88, KT66, KT77, or 6550).

VT4C transmitting triode 1000 Volts plate, 10 Volt 3.2 amp filament, 75Watt plate dissipation when used as transmitter.

Yes, VT4C/211, also used in the Audio Note ONGAKU amplifier, which I already mentioned. Even the 845 is a DHT (Direct Heated Triode), always designed for radio stations and also he used in Hi-Fi amplifiers of the highest level.
But I would not use it ever in guitar amp, not only for the high voltages which require (among other issues involving design), but mainly because their thoriated tungsten filament is mechanically very fragile(!).
What you see mounted on my ACE OF SPADES is another direct heated triode, by "only" 40W maximum dissipation and much more prevalent in the audio field, for which it was specifically designed.
Ever heard of the 300B?

300B another popular single ended output triode.
I don't build much Hi Fi stuff, just guitar amps.
This is my latest one: http://www.nzguitars.com/forum/viewtopi ... 41&t=25264

...It's my favorite power tube.
I build both, guitar amps and Hi Fi amps.
I also recently modified a Fender.
In this case, the protagonist is the Hot Rod De Ville:
