Another cab wiring question

Post by Molly »

I understand I can wire two 16 ohm speakers to match the 8 ohm output from my amp.

What I'm wondering is how much does a differing speaker wattage matter? I was thinking about putting the G12H Anniversary 30w in the same cab as the Creamback 65w.

Had a chance to crank the Boogie 212 Stiletto combo yesterday. I still have the headache. The closed cabinet design with V30s comes out like a f*****g shotgun. I think I want to mellow it a bit. Thinking about making another rear cover with an 'I can't afford a Dr.Z' style oval hole and replacing the V30s as above. At the same time I might order-up a zimmer frame.

When you have mismatched wattage between multiple speakers, you have rate each speaker by the lower wattage - in this case, think of each speaker as a 30w speaker - so your total power handling is 60w.

Thanks Ryan. Was hoping you'd reply.

Out of interest, why do Boogie rate their 412s at 240w? Hopefully not a stupid question, but is a V30 not a 30w speaker?

V30 is a 60w speaker.

Another way of setting it up if you have unmatched power and impedance is to run a 16R 30W speaker with an 8R 60W speaker. The speaker with 2 x the impedance 'sees' half the power that the other speaker sees. (although the tonal result will be different to matched power-impedance speakers.

Thanks for that. About to spend the afternoon wiring my 212. Thinking I'll treat it like two separate 112 cabs and wire each 16 ohm speaker to its own input. I take it this means if I run two outputs from the same amp to each input that it'll be down to 8 ohms? Need to check that the Reinhardt actually has two speaker outputs and an impedance selector before I go ahead.

Yep, total load still becomes 8 ohm.

Thanks, Ryan.

As part of this I put a G12T75 in the H&K Puretone and it really seems to suit it (obscenely loud that amp) then rotated the Splawn through its own G12T75 in the open back combo setting, then the Creamback 65 and the Anniversary G12H-30 in the closed back cabinet. Creamback is still the stand-out for me but in the closed back it seems to have a lot more projection (guess that makes sense). Don't know how meaningful it is when it's not very loud. Need another Gearfest to give all of this stuff a real run.
