Dovetail Jig Recommendations

Post by philly »

Hi..

Thinking about making some speaker/combo cabs...

I have most of the kit... a decent workshop space... a city and guilds cabinetry certificate from about 40 years ago... but very little time

I've made a couple of 2x12's in just using rabbet joints

Any cabinet makers have preferences for Leigh or Keller type jigs?

Cheers

I'm also in the market for making a cab. Dovetail would be nice but haven't done one since school some forty-odd years ago. Will have to look-up this Leigh / Keller thing you mentioned. Any tips you might have would be much appreciated

I think the Keller is nicer to set up... but only does through dovetails...
the Leigh D4R (I think) does half blinds but its not as intuitive and you're limited to width of the jig
I've only made cursory investigations tho
the cabs i've made with rabbet joints have been fine.. did a couple nice tweed/oxblood jobs so you don't see the joints anyway
if I bought one i'd probly try and get something decent for furniture projects etc.

yeah the leigh jigs are really nice, bloody expensive though!

These are a good price http://www.carbatec.co.nz/carba-tec-pro ... jig_c10910

They used to do a basic one with a bit that I bought a few years back, works a treat though doesn't do blind. But not limited to width either.

Or you can get the Leigh from them which is the rolls royce but hella lot of cabs to make to pay for it!
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Hold the phone! Just noticed you're in Dunedin! You're not the guy I sold my 5E3 to are you? He made a mega Tweed extension cab for that.

I'll be around with my sheets of ply next week :-)

That's cool. I'll take you up on that.

Must get in touch with the 5E3 guy. He sent me some follow-up / progress pics of his cab build. It was really tidy.

We shift towards the end of this week. Macandrew Bay.

thanks bg..I wonder if there's a limit on thickness with the carbatec one. it looks like that turns out "rounded" dovetails

i'll flick them an email

yeah maybe, never used one of those, you're probably limited to the width too.
I'll get a pic of the one I got later on, its a shame they don't seem to stock them anymore. I've used it on four cabs and once you get the knack it turns out perfect dovetails.

Nah it doesn't do rounded ones, the router bit you use cuts the right shape, I have a couple of mates with them, work great!
