Maybe if I turn it upside down it will add gain, that will be much better.

Yes you do; remember the Surf music?
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

In most cases I guess it would be. They have great master volumes though.

I have a good relationship with Bryce the owner of this page.
If you get an amp and want it modded, I'd be happy to do it for you.
Wow, that's really nice of you! I did have one, a while back. I'll look out for another.

I do, but I also remember standing there thinking it would sound better with more gain :D

Actually your comment has reminded me one of my early bands did a metal cover of Wipeout, that has brought back some good memories
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

griff7628 wrote:But ya know, for the price of these amps, it would still be a fraction of the cost to import one new and do a mod. You would get something that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind test. SLO 100 for $1000.. yes please!
The main magic about SLO100 are in the transformers. That circuit has been done to death by various manufacturers including Mike himself but nothing sounds like an SLO100, not even Soldano's cheaper models.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

My favourite take on Jose mod would be Mark Cameron's, extremely versatile with dual gain pots and dual bright switches. Can go from hair metal to djent depends on how you set these 4 controls.

The zener diode placement on Friedman's are a bit different than usual Jose mods, I found that they sound better without the SAT switch on.

I do Friedman/Cameron/Fortin Jose mods for people a lot, the look on everyone's face the first time they plug in is always pretty priceless :)

Also the SLO tone isnt totally locked up in the transformers. Ive built a SLO and done a lot of transformer swapping, including a deyoung set and it isnt as important as internet folklore suggests. The cheaper Soldano models dont have 100% the same preamp circuit so of course they are going to sound a little different.

This.
I did a transformer swap myself, and the difference was negligible. Component changes in the circuit will impart the biggest difference to the 'tone' of an amp.

Where are you based mate?

It's mostly doable, the original Jose mod itself is actually a bit crude sounding so probably not the one to go for.
The Friedman and Cameron Jose variations actually sound a bit better than the OG Jose circuit. But these circuits were developed on the plexi so the gain control is post second stage vs the first on the 800, so technically you cant switch back to exactly the 800 circuit. That said, you can make the circuit switchable from pretty damn close to stock 800 to jose firebreather easily enough
Something like the Brown eye circuit with switchable second stage cathode options ("friedman S switch") and switchable zener diodes ("friedman sat switch"/Jose diodes) would make your average 800 into something pretty amazing

I installed a saturation switch about a year ago but removed it pretty fast. It cuts the volume something chronic when on. You have to compensate with the Master but with a 20watt you soon run out of volume on the dial. Nature of the beast I guess.
I Use an overdrive pedal now. But man, there's so much gain on tap with this thing now, extra gain isn't really needed.
