After talking to Steve Bartlet (Baja Electronics) today he reckons the best and cheapest solution will be to do a single line out after the phase inverter as it will be before the power amp section so I can go silent for recording/live and it should retain the character of the amp better than an effects loop because it includes the phase inverter? I’m not sure exactly what all this means but can any amp guru confirm this would be the best solution?
This Attenuator has also come to my attention which is well priced, little info on if it is reactive though.

That attenuator will give you a line out. It would be after the power amp too - as you getting the signal from all of the amp - which would be better? So no need to mod the amp?
