DOUBLENECK.......something wicked this way comes

Post by willow13 »

A question.....what is better than 2 guitars??????
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.....answer....nothing    (well probably more than 2...... :? ), anyway back on track
.
.
.
.....answer.....2 guitars made as one....... :D

here's a project I started about 4yrs ago and never got round to doing much more than gluing the wood together and cutting out the shape. That is until a week ago when the inspiration came back to get going on this build.

so a few details.......top half of body is sapele that has been roughly chambered to take some weight off....the bottom half is fiji kauri. both necks are maple and will have maple boards (but of course......).....it will have a flamed maple top added also........this will startout as a 6/12 string, but i'm sure will turn into something else at some point in time (hopefully a few yrs down the road)

ok pic time

Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

Man, that looks cool.

What's with the headstocks, do they cross over? Looks like one over the top of the other?

Either way, it looks cool.
Yup - that's me and my pal Steve or little stevie vai as I like to call him. In Auckland airport when I was 26. I'm not 26 anymore.

yep it's one on top of the other (that was the wife's idea) I was originally going to do the joined thing like on adrian smith's jackson, then the wife said why don't you do one on top  .....what is cool is the bottom neck had to be about 5mm higher than the top one at the body to do it, so it theory it should make it a bit easier to play on the bottom neck....

well as usual I haven't taken any photos of what I have been doing so just pretend that you have seen more progress ones   .........
had a few ups and downs since last post......1) flamed maple veneer that was on the headstocks (and on body) of last pic's is a goner (thanks to bubbling after gluing......I wanted to add one more coat of blue.....not a good idea when using water based stains and contact adhesive :? .......so it now has a new burly top 8) 8)
2) have had a bit of "fun" with the clear coat as well......put on quite a few coats and decided I didn't like the gloss look, so did the usual finish type sanding (with that lovely fine sand paper that appears to do f'all after hours of sanding (ok minutes  ).....with the burl being so uneven in texture there are a lot of dips (hence shiny bits of unsanded clear coat) ...so I have decided to leave it like that until after the tronfest....with the wet weather I don't think it will go off enough for me to bring it other wise :(

so all that is left to do is a little fret leveling on the 6strg neck and stringing and all the wiring.......so enough chat...here is 1 bad pic just to tease

wait til you see the whole thing  8) ........ which will have to wait until after the tronfest :P

got it wire up first pop      which isn't something I can usually say when it comes to electronics :| ...so just have to make a couple of minor adjustments to the 6 string neck and the placement of the strap button and it should be good to go

Forgot what a bitch it is tuning a 12 string with fresh strings :? mission doesn't really explain it well enough
