transformer....green manalishi/orange roughie
well after gasing for a LP for a while (checked out some PRS single cuts etc) I realised I don't really enjoy playing them (I owned a gibbo LP standard in the 90's, but got rid of it because it never really felt right even though I loved the sound)....I have also had a tele but could never get over the oldness of how it looked ........so saw this cheapo OLP MM1 and grabbed it ($305)
but man that green photo finish was BAD......... ..... so after trying to alter it with some sanding and a little yellow dye (it actually looked a bit better) I decided to re top it with some flamed maple veneer I had ....after much sanding/glueing/staining (yellow briwax, yellow mixed with red FOOD COLOURING then more yellow/clearcoating............here it is
basically has stock neck pick up (which is hotter than the super distortion I have in another guitar and is great for shredding with a bit of warmth) and a JB in bridge that sounds frekkin awesome (I think it really likes basswood)....I switched the toggle and volume pot around, but they are still it a bloody stupid place but i'll live with it

Props to the food colouring, looks good enuff to eat!
My wild pine Tele is dyed with it but you gotta add a triple shot of bourbon.

yep its pretty nice......the JB seems to scream compared to the one that was in the malmsteen strat (and looks super cool in zebra).... maybe its the basswood ....if it is that then I think basswood is my new favourite tone woodhigainer wrote:Hats off man !!!!!

Re: transformer....green manalishi/orange roughie
Hah this was mine ! I put the JB in for exactly that reason, one time Marshall from the forum was playing through my amp with his Epi LP with JB's in it, and it had that screaming 'sing' to it compared to what the OLP sounded like with the stock bridge pickup. The original OLP pickup ended up in a Frankenstrat Mk I project that I no longer have...willow13 wrote:yep its pretty nice......the JB seems to scream compared to the one that was in the malmsteen strat (and looks super cool in zebra).... maybe its the basswood ....if it is that then I think basswood is my new favourite tone woodhigainer wrote:Hats off man !!!!!

Might possibly make a difference that the pickup's directly screwed into the wood, Eddie style, compared to hanging from the pickguard in a strat ?

oh awesome I was wondering if it was someone on here.......EDIT....I just realised it was something you said in a really old thread about them that made me decide to buy oneSome Bozo wrote:Hah this was mine !

The direct mounting to the wood might have something to do with it....one of the duncan quarter pound I have is direct mounted and has that bite as well, I might do a test and hook up one of the other ones (QP) into the malmsteen and compare....
