DIY 3pc Tele saddles (warning contains Tele porn)
I have a G&L tribute Tele that has the 6 individual brass saddles. I have always wondered what the fuss was all about with the 3 saddle trip so thought I would build my own as I don’t want to replace my whole bridge assembly will another, e.g. Wilkinson, Callaham etc. Besides wheres the fun in that, its much more interesting to build these from scratch. So here is the story with some photos. Probably spent about 8hrs on this and it required a fair amount of measurements and calculations.
1. Had some 10mm brass lying around so used that (originals are 8mm I believe). Here they are turned to length alongside the originals.
2. Here is an action shot on my lathe.
3. Then some marking out for centerlines for hole positions.
4. Drill and tap 4 3mm holes in each saddle.
5. Abit of filing.
6. Offer them up to the bridge plate
7.Fit the bridge back on the body and screw the saddles in place.
7. I had measured all the string heights and string break positions. So I knew where they were meant to be. Of course these need some string compensation, these were filed accordingly. I filed some grooves for the strings (to mark out their positions). I had to adjust the angle of these to stop any Sitar like buzzing (this is very important for good tone production). Followed with normal action and intonation setup.
8. Some whole gat shots.
So was it all worth it?
I think so, the tone seems a lot more solid. I also changed my strings from the 10-46 (EB reg Slinkys) I normally use to 10-52 (EB Heavy Bottom). Not sure I like them actually so will probably go back to my old 10-46 set. I have a gig coming up, so will try them for that. One complaint with the old saddles was the 1st string which used to rock on the screw when you bent the string and sometimes the height adjustment screw would vibrate and change its height.
You can pick on every detail about the design of these 3pc saddles to bits forever and the Tele forum has plenty of such details. This has probably been well debated on here for sure also, so I will not raise these ghosts.
Overall I like it and would do it again.

A man has gotta have a maple neck on a Tele, it just is not right any other way. I love the wood on this gat. This is my favourite instrument ....atm. I have a strat copy (burns marquee) with a maple neck and that is very nice also. Maple fb are my 1st choice.Kloppsta wrote:man i loves me some maple fb goodness! i used to be a rosewood snob but since playing a maple fb on my strat for the last wee while its really grown on me! nice work on a nice tele btw

Rog there is beauty in bare wood, but like you I do like to paint stuff, especially purple. One thing about this gat is the clear coat on the body is very nice, and looks quite thick, but there is no way I would strip that off.Rog wrote:Aaarrrrggggghhh my eyes.

Yeah saw those, that is one damn clever design. I guess the saddles will have a limited rotational movement and will bang into each other for extreme settings. Still very nice design. Don't think I will be making those anytime soon, you really need a milling machine for that and unfortunately I don't have one yet.Andy_Chandler wrote:nice job! you have got a lathe though so you're halfway there. Shame you haven't got a milling attachment, saves quite a bit of space for the occasional milling job.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

They seemed to have a pretty good range, Dave Reilly fitted a set to his Tele, worked a treat!
FWIW Dave does excellent work,
"I grew up in LA in the 60s and played in local bands, didn’t everyone?
(well, not everyone grew up in LA in the 60s)
Then I worked as a guitar tech and stage tech for touring musicians.
Going back in time they are...
Ani DiFranco, Graham Nash (CSNY), Melissa Etheridge, Blues Traveler, David Crosby (CPR), Dan Fogelberg, Seal, Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, David Lindley & El Rayo X, Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report, Earth Wind & Fire, Prince, Michael Franks, Lowell George, Little Feat, and starting with The Grass Roots in 1971."

Re: DIY 3pc Tele saddles (warning contains Tele porn)
True a lathe is mill on its side...well kind of. I need one of those vertical slide attachments. I would like one of those combination lathe/mills as most the stuff I do is small. I need to stop spending dosh on music gear and get one I suppose as its one I have gas for. Christmas is coming up so I wonder if mrs santa has room in the sleigh?....yeah probably not I suspect....yep back to filing.BG wrote:you have got a lathe though so you're halfway there.
