Re: Shred-O-Caster WIRING QUESTION

Post by Hades »

Looking at different wiring diagrams at the moment. Few questions- to coil tap or not? I use it often on my JS so thought it would be a good idea here as well.
Also the well rehearsed debate between 500k and 250k pots. What ones do what and what works best?
And orange caps- are they worth using?

Cheers

yes coil-tap! I wouldn't bother with the bleed resistor tap, just wire in permanently. Yes to orange caps.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I did not get Ash to use a coil tap pot on my new "Shred-O-Caster". Being H/H, I just asked him to set it up so the 2nd position on the 5 way switch splits the neck humbucker, middle position is parallel, 4th is a kill switch and 5th is the bridge pup with no split. He had to get creative on wiring apparantly. Should be good with enough tone options for my needs. He used orange caps I think and recommends them or the vitimin Qs etc. He has it together now and doing the final setup stuff. Should be perfect for what i want.

Cheers guys.

My JS is H/H but only has a three-way switch- very creative thinking though.

Out of interest, whats with the killswitch? Seems to be getting popular?

For me it is for doing the killswitch quick on/off trick like Randy Rhoads did, making a neat kind of extreme tremolo effect which has all kinds of uses.
I usually play a Les Paul and have to turn down one volume pot and flick the three way switch, but with this set up on the new guitar it should be much easier. I don't see any other purpose for having one though, if I need to silence a guitar, the volume control does that just fine

Your guitar looks awesome Hades... I have a Killswitch wired on my strat I hardly use now, but they are really good fun in high gain situations!
I recommend using a momentary pushswitch, I put it close to where my picking hand is so its very usable in playing... Tho I've punished my picking hand on it once or twice in a windmill moment. ;)

 Love it

Cheers- might give the killswitch a miss and go with standard 5 way configuration and coil tap.

A few pictures of the tuners- awesome fit, they are only a single pin and they covered the two pin holes from the previous Fender ones very well. There are Sperzel locking tuners from Guitarparts.co.nz

The new noise makers sitting in their new home.

I also have a clear pickguard and a 5+1 Wilkinson trem on the way.

Na, I'm not keen on the dodgy stuff. It was on the neck when I bought it.
I found it on trademe. was screwed to a body but has never been strung. Would say previous owner did it.

Was going to put gold and copper in the paint instead of black but the metalics don't like to be floated on the water surface. Think they are too heavy. I had already ordered the gold hardware so decided to carry on with it.

Think chrome would have blended in a little too much too.

I wonder if a guitar is partly made from parts from a genuine Fender and the body and neck are licenced replacement parts, then the guitar could be argued as being a genuine Fender?
