I always thought the knob was there to stop the hand falling off the end. Might pay to leave it on?

What if your knob comes off too easily? What can you do then to avoid OP problems?

If it was epoxy, you can break the bond with a heat gun. Obviously this is a bad idea if they're plastic knobs, or if you care at all about the paint work on your guitar. But that's how we get the heads off golf clubs, which are glued with epoxy.

2 spoons. With a little padding under the bowl of said spoon - starting with teaspoons - put the tips of the spoons under the knobs opposite each other and lever away to your hearts content... or indeed till the bastard shaft pulls out!!

You can get some real leverage with this, and if the teaspoons fail, move on to big fuck-off, table spoons... :D
There is no sort of aberrant behaviour that cannot be modified by use of the correct ammunition!
