sooooooooooooooooooo was it a bad earth? buggard switch, reverse polarity output jack. unsoldered copper sheets, cold joint, fat lady broken toilet mess

.... it was poisonous solder gas :P

Not sure yet, I'm at work until 8pm, so I won't be able to do anything till later. I'm thinking it will be the earth, need to solder the copper etc..... Actually I'd say it would be a number of things, might have to visit some of my solder points

From lurking on the Metroamp forums, dry solder joints seem to do the damndest things...
