Jazzmaster 2016 build

Post by SimpleSi »

OK!

So officially starting a thread for this.

My Plan is to make a sparkly red Fixed Bridge Jazzmaster with P90's

I Have a neck coming from Warmoth:
- Vintage-Modern style
- Compound Radius
- 6130 Stainless frets (medium jumbo) I prefer the flatter frets, as i fret pretty hard and bend strings out of tune.
- Schaller style Grover tuners - non-locking, it's fixed bridge.
- 1 Piece Birdseye Maple Neck
- Satin Nitro finish.

I used Warmoth's virtual body builder to make a picture for how I'm hoping to get the body to look.

Pickups will be White p90's - Not black - I have Bareknuckle Nantucket P90's coming in.

Hardware is coming from Guitarparts.co.nz

And this nice piece of Korina arrived from Adrian today too :-D

He very kindly traced a template on the timber for me, (JUST FITS) and marked the neck pocket end, and even included a pickguard for me, which will sadly not be needed (anyone need a Black Jazzmaster H-H pickguard for free?)

Updates to come in the following weeks - at the moment I'm just waiting on the Neck to arrive before cutting anything out.

Route it for a Floyd... Just in case. Also leave room for a battery compartment for the battery to power the EMG's!

Nie work. Good choice of wood. With those pickups and wood, it will have a more Gibson sound than say a traditional Jazzmaster. That dry chime of the original Jazz's comes from those flat wide but hot pickups.

What sort of grain filler do you have in mind?

Keep us posted.

I wouldn't have a clue for filler, as it's going to be a solid colour coat, does it matter much?

And yeah will be more Gibson sounding. Same timber they made early flying V's from. Hoping to accomplish a more quacky round tone, with a bit of chime from the Nantucket's - less sparkly than normal JM flat wounds though, they have nice sound snippets of cleans.

There's a bit of magic in a Jazzmaster vibrato, maybe consider one? P-90s are a great choice though.

Hardware arrived, Just waiting on the Neck and Pickguard from Warmoth.
Pickups from Bareknuckle have shipped - so they should be here Next week apparently.

I'm missioning it up to Auckland and Trevor Binford is helping me out again with the use of his clamps, bandsaw and tools etc.

Saves me buying a router etc. plus we get a bit of manly power tool bonding time.

Do you want a mint green pickguard? It's pretty much brand new, never fitted!
It's out of the packet now but here's a picture. PM if your interested but wouldn't cost you much.

I bought a 2nd hand ryobi 3/4HP router off TM for $40 or so, it's still going strong 10 years later.

My MRS bought an electric sander, electric drill, heat gun a few years back. They're all in excellent condition... on account of her never using them!!! :-)
