Figured maple
I am looking for a piece of highly figured maple with a regular even pattern to split and bookmatch as a top for a guitar. I need 5mm thick x two, so a billet that is a bit thicker than a cm would do nicely. Does anyone have anything please?

Re: Figured maple
I don't think you'll have much luck with Adrian.
You'll have better luck with Kerry.
Ash seems to spend less and less time on social media

Re: Figured maple
Head to Tim Spec if you can, they're one of the only places for maple in NZ. For guitar top sized chunks they don't normally charge because not many people in the trades are going to be looking for a piece that small.
Adrian now drives trains so not sure how active he is with the guitaring.

they don't normally charge? really?..every time I have been there I get changed. Also the chances of fining figured stuff is quite small and you'd have to spend ages there going through the racks of woodNippleWrestler wrote:Head to Tim Spec if you can, they're one of the only places for maple in NZ. Re: Figured maple
Yeah, I've tried getting maple from timspec and it was a no go. Best advice (which is what Adrian did) is to bring in some from overseas.

Oh. Didn't know that. I guess it'd be easier to enjoy guitar building when it's not your bread and butter. Oh to have those skills, eh.NippleWrestler wrote:

I like the idea of driving trains. Short of a derailment I don't suppose there's much risk of taking your work home with you. Bet it pays more than teaching too.

Re: Figured maple
Well that's based on what the Christchurch branch told me. The have maple, but if you want anything with figure they were lacking. Unless they sold it all to a dude from Auckland a few years ago....willow13 wrote:I've had no problem getting it from them..mind you I haven't been in there in a few years (I still have quite a bit from last time)Lostininverness wrote:Yeah, I've tried getting maple from timspec and it was a no go. I spent about an 1hr in the auckland branch going through stacks of timber (or should that be lumber) with no luck with any sign of figuringLostininverness wrote: The have maple, but if you want anything with figure they were lacking. Sorry Werdna that I haven't been to get contact happening with my guy. It's complex.

There's the not totally uncommon phenomenon of people chucking themselves in front of your trainMolly wrote:
