Figured maple

Post by werdna »

I am looking for a piece of highly figured maple with a regular even pattern to split and bookmatch as a top for a guitar. I need 5mm thick x two, so a billet that is a bit thicker than a cm would do nicely. Does anyone have anything please?

I don't think you'll have much luck with Adrian.

You'll have better luck with Kerry.

Head to Tim Spec if you can, they're one of the only places for maple in NZ. For guitar top sized chunks they don't normally charge because not many people in the trades are going to be looking for a piece that small.

Adrian now drives trains so not sure how active he is with the guitaring.

they don't normally charge? really?..every time I have been there I get changed. Also the chances of fining figured stuff is quite small and you'd have to spend ages there going through the racks of wood

Yeah, I've tried getting maple from timspec and it was a no go. Best advice (which is what Adrian did) is to bring in some from overseas.

Oh. Didn't know that. I guess it'd be easier to enjoy guitar building when it's not your bread and butter. Oh to have those skills, eh.

I like the idea of driving trains. Short of a derailment I don't suppose there's much risk of taking your work home with you. Bet it pays more than teaching too.
