Custom Guitar - Paint Help

Post by Marshmallow »

Hey guys,

I'm currently building a guitar and I was wondering what kind of tint they use on the guitar necks? Is it amber or a tint of brown? Just finished installing the neck and bridge this weekend with the help of Trevor from Binford since I have 0 experience with necks lol. I am planning to order the nitrocellulose this weekend. The body finish will be in clear since the body is a bookmatched sapele.

Will post a proper build thread later :)

I think the neck is amber tint but I don't really know, I'm only commenting to say that the body looks totally badass! Where is that from?

Shame is not rear routed!

and it has a sort of natural blonde tint, but I'm sure there's a reason 99 out 100 hunters use it on their gun stocks :)

+1 for tru-oil, will give a nice amber edge, and real easy to apply.

Is TruOil a paint finish, or actually furniture oil of some form?

Polymerised linseed oil in solvents. As BG says the easiest to apply and a great feeling finish.

If you want aged amber nitro, I have a jar spare anytime.

It's a foul smelling gun stock oil. With patience some folk get a great finish with it.

This might be a good option. Although I'm thinking of all the possible options, I've seen tru oil finishes online and they look great!. If I were to paint the body in nitro, maybe it may also be nice to paint the neck in nitro? And they can both cure at the same time? ALthough the tru oil is quite cheap.

Note though: The colour of the body will darken a lot, and the burl/ effect or whatever you call it, on the top will shine more. the top has a little quiled effect.

Nitro is a 'sticky' option for guitar necks and not one I'd be in a hurry to use again. I suspect it's only popular because it was the original 'chemical' used at Fender. In my limited experience with nitro it doesn't ever bloody cure and the glass-like finish you enjoy for a few weeks after you've finished continues to dry and 'shrink in' over the following year. I guess that nitro 'smell' is just the thinner continuing to evaporate.

Just FYI, this is the nitro product I used. It can be bought in aerosols ready mixed to whatever colour you want. I used Spray Store in Christchurch but look up Smits Group to find one near you if you want to go that route.
