Redwood

Post by Jay »

The local firewood seller had some rather large cuts of an old redwood tree (ex Hobsonville he says) laying in his yard...

Anyway, I was allowed to take some cuts. Hopefully they will dry without too many cracks.

I tried counting the number of year rings and it was well over 70, so a substantial tree.

Below some pics.

Now I see why they called those trees Redwood.
My last firewood forage landed some potential guitar wood. A light weight kind of Acacia, not the usual heavy splintery black wattle.

Check out what Acacia though. Nice if it was melanoxylon. I made a chair of the black wattle Acacia (the heart wood) and it never stops 'working'. So that was a waste of time. Beautiful colours though.

I've got three sorts, feral black wattle - looks great, arse to work, burns awesome. Then there's what I call the seed pod (stink bomb) wattle - useless weed, still ya never know. Last the silver wattle, bluish/green foliage, has a twisting characteristic to the trunk, pretty yellow hues in the wood, this is the one I chopped up. Seems strong & light.

cover each end in glue (that strong PVA will do). Stops the moisture escaping to fast so should stop 99% of the cracking. I have done it to about 7 logs and none have split
