Hi guys

I have a couple 450 x 220 x 22 planks that Im using for a guitar top that need to be thickness sanded but cant find anyone that does them.

Does anyone know of any local woodworking outfits that would be able to do this?

Cheers

Any reason you want it sanded rather than 'thicknessed'?

What area you in?

Im in Avondale

I still need to finalise the required thickness but I looks like it will be around only 4-5mm which I though would be more suited to a sander than a planer.

Im not experienced with either just thought planers take off more where the sander cleans up and takes a little.

to remove 5mm on a sander would take ages, that's not what they're designed for. You need a thicknesser.

Locally there'll be a furniture shop that could bash it out for you, sometimes auto body shops have them around.

Or you could pop by the men's shed in Glenfield, have a cup of tea with the guys, donate $10 to the biscuit fund and get it done that way while helping out a worthy cause.

If it's planks and a multi-piece top, have you glued them up? Otherwise you'll just need to do it again post glue-up so may as well save the work and do it after you've done your bookmathcing or whatever.

Or if you are going to a joinery shop, you could cut both pieces in half and have two bookmatched tops. You'll lose around 5mm in the cutting process, then get the boards run through a thicknesser. Just make sure they dont take too much off the inside face.

Also be worth leaving 1-2mm thicker incase there is any warp/issue with the glue up of the two pieces. Doesn't take long to sand down a couple mm.

You can use a thicknesser but to go down that thin you will need 'packers' which makes the process a little more fidgety. The advantage with a thicknesser is that you can preset the cut to a required thickness, I have not seen that with a sander so you rely on the operator's skill for consistency.

I have used this shop recently and they are good to deal with and reasonably priced for a 'cash' job.

If you have a router, thicknessing is manageable, as long as you take shallow passes.

else go with the mens shed :)

from 22mm down to 4-5mm i'd think about resawing on a bandsaw.. then sanding

you'd have a few spare then too :-)

Ah sorry, I explained myself wrong, the planks are 22mm and I want to take them down to around 18mm but it could be less. at least 1mm or so is easily removable from being weathered but will see. Sounds like the thicknesser would be the way to go.

Cheers for the feedback guys, I've never had to do this. Thanks also for the heads up about the Mens Shed. I just took a look at their website and thats exactly the type of thing I would like to support.

Problem solved by the looks.

Cheers

Can't be arsed to read replies.

Try your local high school. Probably has a night class for that matter which would give you access to cool machines!

Do what most folk seem to do. Leave a few nails in it then ram it though the school's machine.
