Nut Slotting Files
Im going to get a bunch of bone nuts and Im wanting a set of nut slotting files. Realtone has a set for NZ$118 and StewMac has a set for US$70, any other options? I know, best tools best job but my fret crowning file cost me $12 not the $80 for a "proper one"

Re: Nut Slotting Files
The StewMac tools are amazing, but costly. They are copied however and available on eBay. Do some searching there, is my recommendation.

Re: Nut Slotting Files
This, big time. I bought a set off ebay and they are utterly shite. Gauges not even remotely accurate or even uniform up the length of the file, edges not rounded... buyer beware.GrantB wrote: However the laws of value apply.

Necessity being the mother of invention and lack of money. I made my own from a spare set of feeler gauges. Using a triangular file I cut a row of saw teeth on the edges of the gauges that where about the right thickness.

If you really must file your nuts, I would suggest surgical stainless steel. Wouldn't want an infection down there...

Re: Nut Slotting Files
My issue is, I have my regular player that has a crappy plastic nut with bad slots making action higher than ideal. Emailed my luthier for a price for bone nut fitting but had a reply back saying that they dont answer emails???????????? Bad business me thinks.
Anyway, just wanted a better nut ASAP on my guitar and dont have file set but will get some for the future. I do agree better tools, better job, im just impatient lol

Re: Nut Slotting Files
You could probably use Tip Cleaners for Oxy Acetylene torches. they come in long series sets and are simply round files of various diameters.calling card wrote:Necessity being the mother of invention and lack of money. They are however quite flexible but I think they would do the job.

Funny you should mention the tip cleaners, I've got a few laying in there with my nut slotting kit as finishers

I've owned a set of needle files for about 50 years - used them on aircraft, but they work well filing nuts.

Re: Nut Slotting Files
Whilst I'm sure these would do the trick, I think you'll find that individual nut slotting files from Realtone/Guitarparts are actually slightly cheaper per unit an work well.MakoGat wrote:This is cool info http://fingerlakesguitarrepair.com/maki ... ge-gibson/
