Worth it for Warmoth?

Post by StratMatt »

My Squier superstrat project has been given a boost from philly who has been kind enough to send me out a Floyd Rose bridge and some tuners - thanks again man.

So I'm gonna need a neck that is routed for locking tuners. I could have a go at fashioning one onto the existing neck behind the nut, but I don't have great confidence in that turning out well. I'm pretty happy to be able to install the bridge in the right spot.

Is Warmoth my best bet? If I get a pretty basic neck with no extravagances then it'll come in around $230US. It will be about my only expense, plus a bit more hardware so the cost shouldn't blow out too much. I'm being mindful of putting too much money into this thing.

Any other suggestions?

I have a warmoth on my Jazzmaster - The necks are GREAT

they might need a touch of fretwork because generally when they clear the necks they do it with the frets on.

I've got two different warmoth necks (one strat one tele) and they're lovely. Bit pricey but its top quality.

I suppose if the body I'm using ends up being a real dog then I've still got a good quality neck to do something with. Though it will always be routed for a locking nut which would limit me a bit.

Wonder if good locking tuners would do just as well?

Yeah wondered if that and a roller nut might do the trick? As long as I don't go all Vai/Dimebag on it.

I mean its not a Floyd but John Petrucci goes pretty hard on the whammy and that's just a locking tuner setup

Roller nuts are a ridiculous idea, likely to have more resistance than a well cut nut.

Personally, if you're going Floyd then I would go locking nut. Just because you're going to be tempted to do the whole dive bomb thing. And when you do, the strings won't stay in any nut, they'll just slop around it and end up in other slots or on the floor etc.

If you can say for certain that is NOT going to happen, then roller/graphite and locking tuners is fine. Floyd, for certain you're going to drop it an octave or two, you know it ;)

I've got an allparts one, but it's got a Jackson headstock. Not sure if that's your thing though?
