Re: [pic heavy as fuck] James's backyard goldtop day spa
Sure.
Meanwhile, this morning,
No mail. No packages. No bits of goldtop or tele.
However, we did have success in the put more bits on the headstock front.
Used a little weeny hacksaw to get the mean excess off. Some of it just snapped off; I didn't get too trigger happy with breaking bits off though.
Once I'd faffed about with that, it was due another sand.
Put it outside on the buckin' bronco for ease of access (as opposed to being half bent over like an 1800s miner)
Wew!
Bastard.
Sanded well otherwise. Took alot of "tweaking", and the reverse volute-spot is going to be a right minger to sort out, but I'll get there.
I don't know how I got this right. Glad I did though.
Some bits decided they'd rather be one with nature again, so ...
(some of my images are just gone, rrrr.)
Out came the magical filler again. It sands pretty well (with persuasion) so why not.
Volute mumps are go, as is headstock acne.
Which is weird, cuz it actually turned into a zit that wouldn't dry.
But then I popped it and it played the game.
Yeah, take that. Fuckin' acne.
This fuckin' guy though. You sir, are causing me trouble.
The volutey bit ... I don't know. I'm ... I'm lost, but I'm not giving up on it.
Top side with truss hole lookin' pretty good.
"Meh."
After I'd sanded it and decided I was happy with the texture and so forth, I remember about 20 years ago when my old man stained a pirate map for something I was doing at primary school.
It ... Yeah ok, it sorta worked, but not really. I'll work something else out. There are some stains in the shed so I'll investigate them tomorrow or the next day.
Sod that though, this is my favourite part.
All masked up and so on . . .
Yeah I'm doing the sides black. Whatever. If it looks like a dodo's dick I'll sand it back and poly over the wood.
This would've been etch primer, cuz it's all I had on hand.
Some annoying gaps to fill, still, hmm.
Wasn't quite sure how to mask the truss so I just jammed some tape in there. Seems to have worked.
HOWEVER. My cunning plan to get the gibbo style two screw truss cover on has bollocksed itself and won't work. Guess I'm sticking with the 3 screw one that says gibson on it.
Decided etch wasn't high build enough and acrylic clear would look farty, so I treated myself and the guitar to some stuff I've never used before.
Here is the whole arsenal of aerosol.
I feel this is adequate use of a repurposed kids chair. The cardboard masking spray booth thing is black from when I was painting car parts the other week; may as well give it another shot at greatness.
Then I went and played my tele, did my volunteer thing at the cinema, rah rah rah. Primer had dried good n' properly in the shed, so I went to level it all out again.
Yeah, ok. Good try, primer. Even though you're not high build, you did a pretty good job. I think I'll pick up some real high build shit tomorrow ("spray putty", which I know works) and see if I can sort out the whole "not quite being flat and having divots and wood bits showing through" thing.
PSA though, this primer will do just about anything as long as you don't want it to be an etch. Relatively cheap too.
Here's where I left it for the night. Whacked some more primer on over the top.
Coming up:
More sanding and priming and sanding (this is how panelbeaters blow their own minds).
Still waiting on hardware. Wish it'd hurry up.
New capacitors should turn up soon too - Dude who looks after the cinema (it's a community trust thing) will be supplying me with them for nothing as far as I'm aware. Top bloke, loves his old weird japanese guitars.
When the hardware does fuckin' finally turn up (and I've painted the headstock), I'll get the tuners in. Man, thinking that far ahead is exciting.
I will lacquer over the decals and the tuner holes, so I'll be drilling into a painted surface only, not a lacquered one. Gave the poly a test spray to see how it'd react to the black acrylic.
It smelt really good.

I love this. You appear to have absolutely no fuckin idea how to do the shit you're doing and you're finding ways to do it well along the way. 10/10 would recommend

Yeahp, that's pretty much it. Quite proud of what I can achieve with paint in spray cans, but we've only just started that bit.bbrunskill wrote:You appear to have absolutely no fuckin idea how to do the shit you're doing and you're finding ways to do it [well] along the way.
Crappest part is waiting for shit to dry.

That's what Gibson uses nowadays with their richlite, so no shame in that.Single coil wrote:

Meh it's just for aesthetics anyway. Wouldn't put it on the body or neck join where contact points n shit matter.

I've got a Suhr. It's a great guitar, but I'm not sold on the headstock shape. When you've finished this one... I'll pop the Suhr up to you to give it a fender shaped headstock!

When attempting car painting, this is always my downfall. I could probably get a decent enough finish, if I could ever actually manage to wait between coats.Single coil wrote:Yeahp, that's pretty much it. Sometimes I give it a cheeky tickle with the heat gun. Primer seems to cope ok, colour coat is risky, and wouldn't do it to clear at all.Danger Mouse wrote: When attempting car painting, this is always my downfall. Re: [pic heavy as fuck] James's backyard goldtop day spa
id suggest buying some fiberglass mat and start adding fiberglass layers, this thread needs some new challenge, wood is getting boring,
or could you make a clay mould and hot pour an aluminum former, you seem to have the right shed
what could possibly go wrong

Holy hell.... talk about a labour of love. This is epic.
Probably sacrilege, but am I the only one that thought this could look cool without pickup rings? ... probably.
