The return of the space cowboy

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

Some of you may recall I made a gretsch-o-caster type guitar from an ash custom works tele body routed for a gretsch belt.
I finished the body in tro oil and stained the neck then finished in tru oil.

Never liked the finish that much and I think I waaayy over did the neck stain.

So I started a guitar reno a week or two ago.

Decided to go a vintage cream finish for the body. I will eventually get a single ply black matt guard. Then neck I have completely stripped and amd re-doing in danish oil and briwax wax.

I have intentionally not grain filld as I like the rustic vibe and Ive kept my coats and clear pretty thin so as to get that thin finish feel.

So far so good.

Old body:

New finish (one can rustoleum gloss ivory and 1 can satin clear) - Dont worry , those gouges are going to be under the pickguard.
Ive done a quick test polish under the guard and im quite happy with the finish. Thats grain, not orange peel ;)

Good bye tru oil and stainy wood

Quick peek at how the belt will look with the cream/ivory. I like it

Clear coat has hardened enough for a cut and polish. Finish came out well for rattle cans I think. I wasnt going for mirror perfection mind.

Furniture nails out and in goes the belt.

Where did the belt originate from?

It's the thin part of one of those rather tacky Bejeweled Gretsch guitar straps

Got a chance to do the final fit and finish on this today.
Super glue and bone dust trick to recut the nut too as the E and B were too low.
Substantial truss tweakage and saddle adjustment.
Rewired the four way switch a hundred times before realising my neck pickup hot wire had snapped mid way....  stranded..how??
Very happy with the rustoleum rattle can finish. Its hard, shiny and looks great. And now the belt isnt lost in the wood finish as it was before.
Also got some white button klusons. I like the more natural finish neck too without heavy stain.
