A morning off, a delivery of new strings, and a desire to restore the brass hardware on my 1983 Westone Thunder 1A - one of my favourite guitars of all time.

The knobs, nut, bridge and saddles are solid brass. Very pleasing in the hand (and heavy) but they were a bit monged from time and tarnish.



A paste of vinegar, salt, and flour. 0000 steel wool to remove the stubborn crud, then a polish with Autosol and bam, the crud is gone:







Very pleasing.



I just wish I could find an original truss rod cover for it.

A small brass plate from an engraving / trophy place cut to size would look cool for the truss rod cover

Won't do a full review yet but.... I have tickled my PRS SE Santana as it was due a fettling.

First setup on it, took me ages because I was hopeless at figuring out ratchet straps work. I had to google for my shame. Also getting supports levelish etc.

How did it work? Well, I thought it did exactly what it says. After setup and my usually levelling (its a great height to level at and fret dress, for me anyway) it turned out great. For shits and giggles, I've set the action down to stupid low and no fretting out. Never been able to do that without one or two high spots.

Its not cheap and I could have built my own, but I'd need to buy a lathe and spend time, so I've saved money.

2nd guitar is strapped in and it was way quicker because I knew the process and how ratchet straps work Won't take much longer than a usual fret dress and I know it will be perfect first time around.

Got a couple of refrets to do - sadly parts of my stewmac order were missed, including fretwire Customer service are great though.

Got the body shaping completed, now just a metric fuckton of sanding to do
Weighs in at 2.425 kgs or 5lb 5oz and has a wonderful resonant ping when sanding
Now need bridges to clear customs, who knows when at this time of year

That deserves to be put together with hide glue and tapered dowels. Then nitro for finish

Two guitars and a bass fettled since it arrived, makes it almost too easy

Finally finished the Tolex on a 2x12 I built a while ago, unfortunately my finishing skills are still a bit off, might have to re glue the back oval. Designed it to fit a standard size Marshall head, it sounds big! Like it seems to have more low end kick than my 4x12, although I suspect if I swapped out the G12H 55hz it might be a little less bassy. Overall happy enough and it should serve its purpose as a alternative to my 4x12 without much compromise in sound but easier to get in the car.

Picked up ani e old Stanley No.4 today, now I have two of the buggers. But this came with original box and manual!

After a clean, flatten, sharpen its shaving paper thin. I love using sharp hand tools, they’re a pleasure.

I’d love to complete the set, I’ve got 4, 4 1/2, 5, 6 and a 7 in various states of restoration.
