Nut slot files - Where from?
Can't believe I've never owned a set of nut-slot files. My Tele has typically factory high nut slots so now's as good a time as any to buy a set. StewMac reviews weren't glowing so I wondered if there's another brand you might recommend?

Re: Nut slot files - Where from?
I'd be keen to hear some recommendations too. Currently I have a set of cheapies from Ali or fleabay or somewhere. They're 3 double edged files with coloured handles. Each side of each file corresponds to a string position, not gauge. I don't know what the ideal nut slots should look like, so I can't tell if it's doing a great job or not. They do okay so far, but I'm only using standard set of 10s. When the slots are too high I can lower them and the first fret is no longer sharp in pitch. No idea if these will work on different gauge sets.

StewMac individual files are excellent. The multi sided ones for different gauges less so.

I don't know if these are any good but might be worth considering.

I've seen this. It might 'work', but it's not a clean cut. Depends on what you're happy with.

Scroll down to where you see the pictures in this thread. That shows the difference between some common files and the cheap alternatives.

Those look like gas torch tip cleaners. Usually round in shape.H671 wrote:I don't know if these are any good but might be worth considering.

These are what I've been using for a while and they are pretty good. I've tried the feeler gauge type and they're crap. Only good for polishing the final slot with some 1000 grit wrapped around them.

Re: Nut slot files - Where from?
What sizes do you have? I take it you use the file thats slightly bigger than the sting gauge? Ive got a couple of their double sided ones, but the sizes are pretty limited, looking to get some more at some stage.GrantB wrote:These are what I've been using for a while and they are pretty good. Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Looking at the Ibanez site and on Thomann they are still available. Just pricey...GrantB wrote:Are they made still? They used to be the best..el byrdo wrote:Ibanez

Re: Nut slot files - Where from?
I have a set of hoscos from eBay. Avoid the gas axe tip cleaners, they're shit and those are a complete rip off....
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Re: Nut slot files - Where from?
I got some cheap ones on TM. Seem to work ok, I feel like the Ric is holding tune a bit better after I cleaned up the nut and saddles a bit.
